The questioner : I heard a hadith:
Whoever says in the evening and in the morning: O Allah, You are my Lord, there is no deity but You, You created me, and I am Your servant, and I am upon Your covenant and Your promise as much as I am able, I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done, I acknowledge Your favor upon me, and I acknowledge my sin, so forgive me, for indeed there is no one who forgives sins except You. If he dies that night or that day, he will enter Paradise.

May the Shaykh please rule for us: Is this hadith authentic? And what is its meaning? May you be rewarded.

The Shaykh : Yes, this hadith is authentic. A person should say this every morning and every evening.
O Allah! Thou art my Lord; there is no god but Thee, Thou hast created me, and I am Thy servant
Sunan Abi Dawud 5070Sahih (Al-Albani)
This phrase:
O Allah! Thou art my Lord; there is no god but Thee
Sunan Abi Dawud 5070Sahih (Al-Albani)
contains the affirmation of lordship and worship. The affirmation of lordship is in the statement:
O Allah, You are my Lord.
and the affirmation of worship is in the statement:
Ibn Juraij reported: I asked 'Ata': What do you recite when you are in a state of bowing (in prayer)? He said:" Hallowed be Thou, and with Thy praise, there is no god but Thou." Son of Abd Mulaika narrated to me on the anthority of 'A'isha (who reported): I missed one night the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) (from his bed). I thought that he might have gone to one of his other wives. I searched for him and then came back and (found him) in a state of bowing, or prostration, saying: Hallowed be Thou and with Thy praise; there is no god but Thou. I said: With my father mayest thou be ransomed and with my mother. I was thinking of (another) affair, whereas you are (occupied) in another one.
Sahih Muslim 485
.
You created me, and I am Your servant.
It contains the complete acknowledgment that the favor belongs to Allah (Mighty and Majestic) in creating the servant, for He is the one who created him and brought him into existence from nothing. It also contains complete humility before Allah (Mighty and Majestic) in the statement:
And I am Your servant.
The servant must humble himself before his Master, carry out his obedience, and not disobey his command.
and hold to Thy covenant and promise as much as I can
Sunan Abi Dawud 5070Sahih (Al-Albani)
This means I am upon Your covenant to carry out Your obedience, and upon Your promise to believe in it. For Allah the Exalted promised that whoever fulfills the covenant of Allah, He (Exalted and Majestic is He) will fulfill His covenant for him. And His statement:
As much as I am able.
means to the extent of my ability. In this is the acknowledgment of exerting one’s utmost effort and energy in the obedience of Allah (Mighty and Majestic).
I seek refuge in Thee from the evil of what I have done
Sunan Abi Dawud 5070Sahih (Al-Albani)
For a person does evil, and it may have a dire consequence, so he says:
I seek refuge in Thee from the evil of what I have done
Sunan Abi Dawud 5070Sahih (Al-Albani)
.
I acknowledge Your blessing
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5522Sahih (Darussalam)

And I acknowledge my sin.
I acknowledge it, and acknowledging the sin to Allah the Exalted is among the causes of forgiveness.
and I acknowledge my sin; pardon me
Sunan Abi Dawud 5070Sahih (Al-Albani)
Forgive me with a forgiveness from You, and have mercy on me, for You are the All-Forgiving, the Most Merciful. Yes.
