Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon his family and his Companions.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Chapter on the recommendation of shaking hands upon meeting, the brightness of the face, kissing the hand of a righteous man, kissing one's child out of compassion, and embracing one who returns from a journey, and the dislike of bending. From Abu al-Khattab Qatadah, who said: I asked Anas: Did shaking hands occur among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: Yes. Al-Bukhari narrated it. And from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: When the people of Yemen came, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The people of the Yemen have come to you and they are first to shake hands. قد جاءكم أهل اليمن وهم أول من جاء بالمصافحة
Sunan Abi Dawud 5213
Abu Dawud narrated it with a sound chain. And from al-Bara' (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
No two Muslims meet each other and shake hands, except that Allah forgives them before they part. ما من مسلمين يلتقيان فيتصافحان إلا غفر لهما قبل أن يفترقا
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2727Da'if (Darussalam)
Abu Dawud narrated it. And from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: A man said: O Messenger of Allah, when one of us meets his brother or his friend, should he bend to him? He said:
No. لا
He said: Should he embrace him and kiss him? He said:
No. لا
He said: Should he take his hand and shake it? He said:
Yes نعم
Al-Tirmidhi narrated it and said: It is a good hadith"

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
This chapter was established by the author al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) in his book *Riyad al-Salihin* under the etiquette of greeting and seeking permission and what is related to that. Among these is shaking hands: Is it recommended for a man to shake hands when he meets his brother? The answer is yes, it is recommended for him to do so, because this is among the etiquettes of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), as Qatadah asked Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): "Did shaking hands occur among the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family)? He said: Yes". He should shake hands with his right hand, and when this happens, they are forgiven before they part. This indicates the virtue of shaking hands when he meets him. This is when he meets him to talk with him or the like. As for mere meeting in the market, this was not the way of the Companions; that is, if you pass by people in the market, it is sufficient to greet them. But if you are talking to your companion or speaking to him about something, shake his hand. Then we should know that some people, when they finish the prayer, shake hands with their brother from the obligatory prayer, shaking his hand and sometimes saying: "Accepted, accepted." This is from religious innovations; the Companions did not do this, that when they finished the obligatory prayer, one of them would shake hands with the other. Rather, it is sufficient for a person to say "Peace be upon you and Allah's mercy" to his right and "Peace be upon you and Allah's mercy" to his left. As for bending upon meeting, or embracing and clinging, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about it: Should he bend to him? He said:
No. لا
He said: Should he embrace him and hug him? He said:
No. لا
So when he meets him, he does not embrace him, meaning he does not hold him close to him, nor does he hug him, nor does he bend to him. Bending is more severe and greater, because bending involves a type of submission to other than Allah (Mighty and Majestic) similar to the submission to Allah in bowing, so it is prohibited. But he shakes his hand, and this is sufficient, unless there is a reason for embracing or kissing, in which case there is no harm, such as if he returns from a journey or the like. If someone asks: How does the Messenger (may the prayer and peace of Allah be upon him) say regarding bending that he should not bend to him, while Allah the Exalted says regarding the brothers of Yusuf:
(99) And when they entered upon Joseph, he took his parents to himself and said, "Enter Egypt, Allah willing, safe [and secure]." (100) And he raised his parents upon the throne, and they bowed to him in prostration. And he said, "O my father, this is the explanation of my vision of before. My Lord has made it reality. And He was certainly good to me when He took me out of prison and brought you [here] from bedouin life after Satan had induced [estrangement] between me and my brothers. Indeed, my Lord is Subtle in what He wills. Indeed, it is He who is the Knowing, the Wise. لما دخلوا على يوسف آوى إليه أبويه وقال ادخلوا مصر إن شاء الله آمنين * ورفع أبويه على العرش وخروا له سجدًا
[Yusuf 12:99-100]
? The answer to this is: This is from a previous law in a previous law, and this Islamic law has prohibited it. So it is not permissible for anyone to prostrate to anyone, even if worship is not intended in it, and he does not bend to him; even bending is prohibited by the Messenger (may the prayer and peace of Allah be upon him). So if someone meets you who is ignorant of this matter and bends to you, advise him and guide him. Say: This is prohibited; do not bend and do not submit except to Allah alone. And success is from Allah.
