The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
He said, may Allah have mercy on him: “Chapter on what is said at the time of death and what is said by one who has lost a relative. It was narrated from Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When a slave's child dies, Allah the Most High asks His angels, 'Have you taken out the life of the child of My slave?" They reply in the affirmative. He then asks, 'Have you taken the fruit of his heart?' They reply in the affirmative. Thereupon he asks, 'What has My slave said?' They say: 'He has praised You and said: Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji'un (We belong to Allah and to Him we shall be returned). Allah says: 'Build a house for My slave in Jannah and name it as Bait-ul-Hamd (the House of Praise). إذا مات ولد العبد قال الله تعالى لملائكته: قبضتم ولد عبدي، فيقولون: نعم، فيقول: قبضتم ثمرة فؤاده، فيقولون: نعم، فيقول: فماذا قال عبدي؟ فيقولون: حمدك واسترجع، فيقول الله تعالى: ابنوا لعبدي بيتًا في الجنة وسموه بيت الحمد
Riyad as-Salihin 1395
Al-Tirmidhi narrated it and said: ‘A good hadith.’ It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Allah, the Exalted, says: 'I have no reward except Jannah for a believing slave of Mine who shows patience and anticipates My reward when I take away his favourite one from the inhabitants of the world
Riyad as-Salihin 923
Al-Bukhari narrated it. It was narrated from Usamah ibn Zayd (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: One of the daughters of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for him to invite him and inform him that a boy of hers or a son was dying. So he said to the messenger:
To Allah belongs what He takes and what He gives, and everything has a limited period (in this world). So ask her to endure patiently, and expect the reward of Allah.
Riyad as-Salihin 924
And the rest of the hadith was mentioned. It is agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim.”

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
These hadiths were mentioned by al-Nawawi, may Allah have mercy on him, in *Riyad al-Salihin* regarding what is said at the time of death, meaning when a person loses someone, what should he say? We have previously referred to two hadiths with which this chapter was introduced, and they are from Umm Salimah (may Allah be pleased with her) when her husband died, and she said: “Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him we return. O Allah, grant me reward in my affliction and replace for me something better than it.” So Allah replaced for her Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). As for the remaining three hadiths, they are about one who loses a child and praises Allah, seeks recompense, and is patient, for Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, will compensate him with Paradise for that, as in the hadith where Allah the Exalted, when the angels take the soul of his child, says to the angels: ‘Have you taken the child of My servant?’ They say: ‘Yes.’ And He knows, Mighty and Majestic is He, that they have taken the child of His servant, but He says this, Exalted and Majestic is He, to manifest the virtue of this servant and that he praised Allah and sought recompense at this great calamity. So He says:
Have you taken the fruits of his work." They reply: "Yes." So He says: "What did My slave say?" They reply: "He praised you and mentioned that to You is the return." قبضتم ثمرة فؤاده؟ فيقولون: نعم، فيقول: ماذا قال؟ قالوا: حمدك واسترجع
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1021Da'if (Darussalam)
Meaning: He said: ‘Praise be to Allah, indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him we return.’ And praise at the time of calamities is what indicates a person’s patience with the divine decree and destiny of Allah, and that he was patient and praised Allah for this calamity. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) used to say when something he disliked happened to him:
Al-Hamdulillah 'Ala Kulli Hal (All praise is due to Allah in every circumstance).
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2738Hasan (Darussalam)
And when something he was pleased with happened to him, he would say:
Al-hamdu lillahil-ladhi bi ni'matihi tatimmus-salihat (Praise is to Allah by Whose grace good deeds are completed)
Sunan Ibn Majah 3803Da'if (Darussalam)
“Praise be to Allah in every circumstance.” And He, Glorified and Exalted is He, informed, as narrated by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), that there is no person from whom Allah takes a child and he is patient and seeks recompense, except that Allah will compensate him with Paradise for it. And likewise, what al-Bukhari narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
There is no person from whom a beloved one dies
Yes, Allah the Exalted says:
I have nothing to give but Paradise as a reward to my believer slave, who, if I cause his dear friend (or relative) to die
Sahih al-Bukhari 6424
‘His beloved’ means the one He has chosen and selected from a child, a wife, or otherwise. If Allah takes that beloved one and he seeks recompense, then he has Paradise for that. As for the last hadith, it is about the story of one of the daughters of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) who had a son in the process of dying, so she sent for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), sending to him to invite him. So he said to the messenger, meaning the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), he said to the messenger whom this woman sent:
Go back and tell her that whatever Allah takes is His, and whatever He gives is His, and everything with Him has a limited fixed term (in this world). So order her to be patient and hope for Allah's reward.
Sahih al-Bukhari 7377
So he ordered her to be patient and seek recompense from Allah, Mighty and Majestic is He. A person should say these words when consoling his brother, for they are the best with which to console: “Indeed, to Allah belongs what He takes and what He gives, and everything with Him is by a specified term.” Be patient and seek recompense; be patient and guide him to seek recompense from Allah. And Allah grants success.
