The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions:
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) transmitted, in the context of the hadiths in the chapter on the traveler's takbir when ascending heights and the like, and his tasbih when descending into valleys and the like, and the prohibition of exaggerating in raising the voice in takbir and the like: "From Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey, so whenever we ascended a valley, we would say the takbir and our voices would rise. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O people, be gentle with yourselves, for you are not calling upon one who is deaf or absent. Indeed, He is with you; indeed, He is Hearing and Near.
Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim"
.

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
It has been established that it is recommended for the traveler, when he ascends and rises, to say the takbir, and when he descends and goes down, to say the tasbih, and we have explained the wisdom behind this. However, it is recommended for a person, when he does this—meaning, when he says takbir at the heights and tasbih at the descents—not to strain himself or make it difficult for himself, nor to raise his voice to an extreme degree, as in the hadith of Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him):
They were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) on a journey, so they would say the tahlil and takbir and raise their voices. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O people, be gentle with yourselves.
"Be gentle with them," meaning, be easy on them, do not make it difficult for yourselves by raising your voices:
for you do not call a deaf or an absent one, but you call the All- Listener, the All-Seer
Sahih al-Bukhari 6610
: and He is Allah (Mighty and Majestic); you do not need to strain yourselves in raising your voices in tasbih, tahmid, and takbir, because Allah the Exalted hears and sees, and He is Near (Exalted and Majestic is He), even though He is above His heavens, but He encompasses everything (Exalted and Majestic is He). Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) said:
The seven heavens and the seven earths are in the palm of the Merciful One, except as a mustard seed in one of your palms.
: All the heavens and the earth are not comparable to Allah (Mighty and Majestic); He (Exalted and Majestic is He) encompasses everything and is above everything. In this is evidence that it is not recommended for a person to make worship difficult for himself, neither in its performance nor in its consistency. For this reason, when it reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) that Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) said, out of his intense desire for good:
I will surely stand in prayer all night as long as I live, and I will surely fast all day as long as I live.
meaning, he said that he intended to fast every day and stand in prayer every night. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) heard this, he called him and said:
Are you the one who said this? That you will fast all day as long as you live, and stand in prayer all night as long as you live? He said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. He said: You will not be able to do that. Then he ordered him to fast three days of every month and to stand in prayer and sleep. He said: I am able to do more than that. So he kept pressing him until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: Fast one day and break the fast the next. He said: I am able to do better than that. He said: There is nothing better than this; this is the fast of Dawud (peace be upon him); he would fast one day and break the fast the next.
: so that he might strengthen himself with the day of breaking the fast for the day of fasting. When he grew older (may Allah be pleased with him), it became difficult for him; it was difficult for him to fast one day and break the fast the next. So he said:
I wish I had accepted the dispensation of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Musannaf Abd al-Razzaq 7:588
, then he began to fast fifteen days in a row and break the fast for fifteen days in a row, because he was unable to fast one day and break the fast the next. As for standing in prayer, he said to him:
The highest level is to sleep for half the night, stand in prayer for a third of the night, and sleep for a sixth of the night.
Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah 2:776
: divide it into three parts: sleep for half, stand for one-third, and sleep for one-sixth. And he said:
There is noting better than that.
Sunan an-Nasa'i 2392Sahih (Darussalam)
.
The conclusion is that it is not recommended for a person to make worship difficult for himself; whenever it becomes easy, let him praise Allah. Some people, in the days of winter, have hot water and cold water, yet they perform wudu with the cold water and leave the hot water, tormenting themselves. And Allah (Mighty and Majestic) says:
What would Allah do with your punishment if you are grateful and believe?
[An-Nisa 4:147]
. Yes, if you have only cold water and you use it and it is difficult for you, you have a reward. But to turn away from the easy to the difficult in pursuit of reward, this is not correct. Whenever the matter becomes easy, do it. Similarly, if some people say: "I want to walk on my feet to Hajj because it is harder than traveling by car," we say: this is a mistake. If Allah makes worship easy for you, do it.
Or if a person says: "I will read by weak light and not by strong light, because reading by weak light is harder," we say: this is also a mistake. Whenever worship becomes easy, do what is facilitated, but do not fall short. However, if it is not possible except with hardship, then this matter is up to Allah. Whenever you are tired in worship, you have a reward. And Allah grants success.
