The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions:
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) transmitted, in the context of the hadiths in the chapter on the virtue of night prayer: "From Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar, that 'Umar bin al-Khattab رضي الله عنه said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked: Can a man go to sleep when he is junub? He said: `Yes, if he does wudoo’.` سُئل رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : أي الصلاة أفضل ؟
Musnad Ahmad 105Sahih (Darussalam)
Muslim narrated it.
And from 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As (may Allah be pleased with them both), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The Salat which is dearest to Allah is that of (Prophet) Dawud; and As-Saum (the fasting) which is dearest to Allah is that of (Prophet) Dawud. He used to sleep half the night, get up to perform Salat for one-third of it, then sleep through the remaining one-sixth of it; and he used to observe Saum on alternative days.
Riyad as-Salihin 1177
It is agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
And from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
Every night there is a special time during which whatever a Muslim asks Allah of any good relating to this life or the Hereafter, it will be granted to him; and this moment comes every night.
Riyad as-Salihin 1178
Muslim narrated it"
.

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
These hadiths were cited by the author al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) in his book *Riyad al-Salihin* in the chapter on the virtue of night prayer, among them:
That the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) was asked: "Which prayer is the best?" He said: "The one with prolonged standing in prayer" أن النبي صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم سئل : أي الصلاة أفضل ؟
: And what is meant by prolonged standing in prayer is: prolonged humility before Allah Mighty and Majestic, and standing, bowing, and prostrating.
The scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) differed on which is better: prolonging the recitation while shortening the bowing and prostrating, or is it better to shorten the recitation, bowing, and prostrating? In other words, is it better to increase the number of units with a large count, or to prolong the units with a small count? The correct view is that the best is for the prayer to be balanced. It was mentioned in yesterday's lesson that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) would make his bowing approximately equal to his standing, and his prostration likewise approximately equal to his standing, meaning close to it.
And he (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned from that the hadith of 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As (may Allah be pleased with them both), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
The Salat which is dearest to Allah is that of (Prophet) Dawud; and As-Saum (the fasting) which is dearest to Allah is that of (Prophet) Dawud.
Riyad as-Salihin 1177
: As for his prayer, meaning the voluntary night prayer,
who used to sleep for (the first) half of the night and pray for 1/3 of it and (again) sleep for a sixth of it
Sahih al-Bukhari 3420
If a person sleeps half the night, he gets a large share of sleep. If he then stands for a third and sleeps for a sixth, the fatigue he incurred from standing is relieved by the sleep at the end of the night. However, with this, if a person stands in prayer at any hour of the night, it is hoped that he will attain the reward. What the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned is the most beloved to Allah and the best, but it is sufficient for you to stand for the last third, the middle third, or the first half, according to what is easy for you.
'Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said:
From the entire night, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) would perform the witr prayer from the beginning of the night, the middle of it, and the end of it
.
So the matter in this is, praise be to Allah, broad.
Then he mentioned the third hadith:
That there is an hour in the night in which no Muslim servant calls upon Allah the Exalted for good but that He gives it to him
: And this hour is not known specifically, meaning Allah knows best. But the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) informed us of this so that we strive and seek the favor of Allah Mighty and Majestic and His grace in accepting supplication. This is like the hour on Friday, which is ambiguous, although the hour on Friday is most likely to be when the imam, meaning the preacher, is present until the prayer is completed. And Allah grants success.
