The reciter: He said (may Allah have mercy on him): "Chapter on the recommendation of the prostration of gratitude when a manifest blessing is attained or a manifest calamity is averted:
It was narrated from Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said:
We set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) from Makkah intending to go to al-Madinah. When we were near 'Azura, he stopped, then he raised his hands and supplicated to Allah for a while, then he prostrated and remained in prostration for a long time, then he stood up and raised his hands for a while, then he prostrated — he did this three times — and he said: "I asked my Lord and interceded for my Ummah, so He gave me one-third of my Ummah, so I prostrated to my Lord in gratitude. Then I raised my head and asked my Lord for my Ummah, so He gave me one-third of my Ummah, so I prostrated to my Lord in gratitude. Then I raised my head and asked my Lord for my Ummah, so He gave me the remaining third, so I prostrated to my Lord."

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
He said (may Allah have mercy on him): "Chapter on the prostration of gratitude when blessings are renewed and calamities are averted": It is known that the blessings of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) are innumerable, as Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) said:
And if you should count the favors of Allah, you could not enumerate them وإن تعدوا نعمة الله لا تحصوها
[An-Nahl 16:18]
: And I give as an example the breath that is repeated up to sixty times in one minute. If this breath were held, the person would die, so it is a great blessing, and it is not possible to count them. Likewise, health and well-being, eating and drinking, urination and defecation, all of these are great blessings, but they are continuous blessings. If a person were required to prostrate for every one of these blessings, he would remain prostrating for the rest of his life. But there are blessings that are renewed for a person, such as a child being born to him, or marriage becoming easy for him, or a person who was absent and whose return was hoped for being presented to him, or obtaining wealth or something similar to these renewed blessings, or being given glad tidings of the victory of the Muslims or something similar to that. In this case, it is recommended for the person to prostrate to Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) in gratitude to Him.
For example, if a person is given glad tidings of a child, and it is said to him: "Be glad, you have a child," this is a renewed blessing, so he prostrates to Allah as he prostrates in prayer, and he says: "Subhan Rabbi al-A'la (Glory be to my Lord, the Most High), Subhanaka Allahumma Rabbana wa bihamdika, Allahumma ighfir li (Glory be to You, O our Lord, and praise be to You, O Allah, forgive me)," then he thanks Allah for the specific blessing that has been attained, and he says: "I thank You, O my Lord, for this blessing," and he praises Allah (the Exalted) for it.
Likewise, the averting of calamities: A person is always in safety, always in safety, and always exposed to afflictions and calamities, but sometimes the causes of a calamity gather and he sees it, and then Allah removes it from him. Let us give an example of this with an incident: A person, for example, is walking on the road and a car overturns, but he is saved. This is the averting of a calamity, so he prostrates to Allah (the Exalted) in gratitude for the averting of this calamity.
Or a person, for example, is walking and suddenly a hole opens up in the ground beneath him, but he is saved. This is the averting of a calamity, and he praises Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) for it. The averting of calamities is common. So if Allah averts a calamity from you, prostrate to Allah (the Exalted) in gratitude for the averting of this calamity, and say, for example, in the prostration: "Subhan Rabbi al-A'la (Glory be to my Lord, the Most High)" three times, "Subhanaka Allahumma Rabbana wa bihamdika, Allahumma ighfir li (Glory be to You, O our Lord, and praise be to You, O Allah, forgive me)," "Allahumma inni ashkuru 'ala anna najjaytani min hadhihi al-musibah (O Allah, I thank You for that You saved me from this disaster)," and he mentions it. This is the prostration of gratitude.
The scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) differed on whether ritual purity is a condition for it or not? And the correct view is that it is not a condition, because this comes suddenly and the person is not prepared. If he were to go and perform wudu, the interval between the cause and its effect would be prolonged. So if he is not in a state of ritual purity, let him prostrate even if he is not in a state of ritual purity. And success is from Allah.
