As for the hadith of 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): He prayed with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) one night

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : As for the hadith of 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): He prayed with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) one night, because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) had his door open; his house was a house for the Companions and for the Ummah. One would come at night wishing to pray with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He would not say to him: Do not pray with me, pray in your house. Rather, he would open his chest for him, and he would enter the house and pray with him. And Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) was among those who served the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), the one in charge of the miswak, who cleaned the miswak of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) for him, and the one in charge of the pillow and its cushion, and the one in charge of the sandals (may Allah be pleased with him).
So he would enter upon the Messenger and pray with him. He prayed with him one night, and when he entered the prayer, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) lengthened the standing. He lengthened the standing, saying:
Until I was about to do something bad. It was asked: What were you about to do, O Abu 'Abd al-Rahman? He said: I was about to sit down and leave him
: And he was young, and the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was older than him, and yet he would stand and lengthen the prayer until the youth would be unable to keep up with his standing (peace and blessings be upon him). And Allah had forgiven him what came before of his sin and what came after, but he would pray (peace and blessings be upon him) in gratitude to Allah (Mighty and Majestic), as he said:
Shouldn't I love to be a thankful slave (of Allah)?
Sahih al-Bukhari 4837
. And the second time, Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) prayed with him one night. He began with Surat al-Baqarah, and I said: He will bow at the hundredth verse: meaning when he completed a hundred verses he would bow. But he continued, so I said: He will bow with it. But he completed it, then he began with Surat al-Nisa and completed it, then he began with Surat Ali 'Imran and completed it: he would recite in a measured manner (peace and blessings be upon him), reciting the Qur'an in a measured manner. And these three surahs represent five parts and a quarter of a part. Five parts and a quarter of a part, recited in a measured manner, how many hours does that take? Approximately two and a half hours. Two and a half hours, and he was standing, may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him,
And he would not pass a verse of mercy without asking, nor a verse of glorification without glorifying, nor a verse of warning without seeking refuge
: So he combined recitation, dhikr, and du'a' (peace and blessings be upon him) with this great length.
Then he bowed
, and how was his bowing?
his bowing lasted about the same length of time as his standing
Sahih Muslim 772
, he lengthened the bowing, then he raised his head saying:
Allah hears the one who praises Him, and his standing was approximately the length of his bowing, then he prostrated and his prostration was approximately the length of his standing
: And so his prayer was proportionate: if he lengthened the recitation, he lengthened the bowing and prostration. He would say in the bowing: Glory to my Lord, the Most Great. And he would say in the prostration: Glory to my Lord, the Most High. And he would also say, in addition to that: Glory be to You, O Allah, our Lord, and to You is praise, O Allah, forgive me. And he would also say: The One who is free from all imperfections, the Holy, the Lord of the angels and the Spirit. So prayer is a garden among the gardens of worship, a garden containing every beautiful kind: Qur'an, dhikr, du'a', tasbih, takbir, and seeking refuge. For this reason, it is the best of the physical acts of worship, better than fasting, and better than zakah, and better than Hajj, and better than all acts of worship except tawhid (the oneness of Allah): I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. This is the key to Islam.
So the result is that this is the description of the night prayer of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). So strive, O my Muslim brother. I ask Allah to help me and you to follow Him outwardly and inwardly, and to cause us to die upon His religion, and to gather us in His group, and to enter us with Him into the Gardens of Pleasure.
The student: Amen.
