The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions:
He said (may Allah have mercy on him): "Chapter on the Virtue of the Miswak and the Characteristics of the Fitrah:
From Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
If I had not found it hard for my followers or the people, I would have ordered them to clean their teeth with Siwak for every prayer.
Sahih al-Bukhari 887
Agreed upon.
And from Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), he said:
Whenever the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) got up (from sleep), he would rub his teeth with Miswak (tooth-stick).
Riyad as-Salihin 1197
Agreed upon.
And from Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), she said:
We used to prepare for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) his miswak and his water for ablution, so Allah would send him to wake up whenever He willed to send him from the night, so he would use the miswak, perform ablution, and pray
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 1:149
Narrated by Muslim.
And from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
I have told you repeatedly to use the Siwak.
Sahih al-Bukhari 888
Narrated by al-Bukhari.
And from Shurayh ibn Hani', he said:
I asked 'Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her): "What was the first thing which the Prophet (ﷺ) would do when he entered his house?" She replied: "He would use Miswak (tooth-stick)."
Riyad as-Salihin 1200
Narrated by Muslim.
And from Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him), he said:
I went to the Apostle (ﷺ) and found one end of the tooth-stick upon his tongue
Sahih Muslim 254
Agreed upon, and this is the wording of Muslim.
And from Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Siwak is a means of purification for the mouth and is pleasing to the Lord.
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5Sahih (Darussalam)
Narrated by al-Nasa'i and Ibn Khuzaymah in his *Sahih* with authentic chains"
.

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
The author al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his book *Riyad al-Salihin*: "Chapter on the Virtue of the Miswak and the Sunnahs of the Fitrah": The miswak: it is the act of using the miswak, which is rubbing the teeth, gums, and tongue with an arak stick. This known miswak is the arak stick, and the virtue is obtained with the arak stick or with any other stick that resembles it. The correct view is that it is also obtained with a cloth or a finger, but the stick is better. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) mentioned two great benefits regarding it, as in the hadith of Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
Siwak is a means of purification for the mouth and is pleasing to the Lord.
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5Sahih (Darussalam)
: "Purifier for the mouth" means it purifies the mouth from dirt, bad odor, and other harmful things. And his saying:
for the mouth للفم
: includes the entire mouth, the teeth, gums, and tongue, as in the hadith of Abu Musa:
I went to the Apostle (ﷺ) and found one end of the tooth-stick upon his tongue
Sahih Muslim 254
.
The second benefit: "Pleasing to the Lord," meaning that using the miswak is among the causes of Allah's pleasure with the servant.
And the miswak has specific times when it is emphasized, otherwise it is a recommended practice at all times, but it is emphasized in certain places, among which are:
When one gets up from sleep, it is recommended for him to use the miswak, due to the hadith of Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him):
That the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to, when he got up from sleep, rub his mouth with the miswak
: meaning he uses the miswak.
And this is supported by the hadith of Aishah:
That they used to prepare for him his miswak and his ablution, and when he got up, he would use the miswak, perform ablution, and pray as much as Allah willed
, so it is recommended when getting up from sleep at night or during the day, because the mouth changes, so it is recommended to use the miswak.
Likewise, it is recommended when a person enters his house; the first thing he does upon entering is to use the miswak:
Because Aisha was asked: With what did the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) begin when he entered his house? She said: With the miswak
.
Thirdly: he uses the miswak at prayer. If he intends to pray an obligatory or voluntary prayer that includes bowing and prostration, or the funeral prayer, it is recommended for him to use the miswak, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Were it not hard on my ummah, I would order them to use the tooth-stick at the time of every prayer.
Sunan Abi Dawud 47Sahih (Al-Albani)
.
Likewise, the use of the miswak is strongly recommended during ablution, and its place is during the mouth-rinsing, or before or after it. But during ablution, he uses the miswak either during the mouth-rinsing, or before or after it. The important thing is that during ablution, it is recommended to use the miswak, as that came from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family).
And the scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) included the case where one's mouth changes due to eating or drinking milk or the like of what has fat, so it is recommended to use the miswak, because it purifies the mouth.
In any case, the miswak is a recommended practice, and it is emphasized in certain places, but in terms of its recommendation, it is prescribed at all times, even for the fasting person after the sun has passed its zenith, for he is like others in that it is recommended for him to use the miswak. As for those who disliked that from among the scholars, their statement has no evidence for it, and the correct view is that the fasting person uses the miswak at the beginning of the day and at the end of the day. And Allah grants success.
