The Shaykh : Likewise, among the days for which fasting is recommended are six days of Shawwal, as in the hadith of Abu Ayyub that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever fasts Ramadan, then follows it with six from Shawwal, then that is (equal in reward) to fasting everyday. مَن صام رمضان ثم أتبعه ستًا من شوال فكأنما صام الدهر
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 759Sahih (Darussalam)
:
The scholars explained this by saying that a good deed is rewarded ten times over, so Ramadan becomes a month equivalent to ten months, and the six days become sixty days, which is two months. Accordingly, it is recommended for a person, when he has completed the fasting of Ramadan, to fast six days of Shawwal.
And let it be known that they are not to be fasted before making up missed days. That is, if a person has one day of Ramadan remaining and he fasts the six days, he will not obtain their reward, because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever fasts Ramadan من صام رمضان
. And whoever has one day of Ramadan that he did not fast, but rather fasted days of it—if he has one day remaining, how many did he fast? Twenty-nine. If he has two days remaining, he fasted twenty-eight. He did not fast the month, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) says:
Whoever fasts Ramadan من صام رمضان
.
So if you fast Ramadan and then fast six days after it from Shawwal, it is as if you fasted the entire year. It is the same whether you fast on the second day of the festival and follow them one after another, or fast them after two or three days, or fast them consecutively, or fast them scattered; the matter is broad in this regard. However, if you are lax until Shawwal has passed and you fast, they will not have this reward, except for one who is excused, such as being sick, or a woman with post-natal bleeding, or a traveler who did not fast in Shawwal and made them up in Dhu al-Qa'dah; there is no harm in that.
