All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
He (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Chapter on the explanation of a group of martyrs regarding the reward in the Hereafter. Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said:Mishkat al-Masabih 1546 Agreed upon. And from him (may Allah be pleased with him) it is narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Who do you consider to be the martyrs among you?' They said: 'O Messenger of Allah, the one who is killed in the cause of Allah is a martyr.' He said: 'If that is the case, then the martyrs of my Ummah are few!' They said: 'Who then, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'The one who is killed in the cause of Allah is a martyr, the one who dies in the cause of Allah is a martyr, the one who dies of the plague is a martyr, the one who dies of a stomach ailment is a martyr, and the one who drowns is a martyr' Narrated by Muslim."
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The author al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his book *Riyad al-Salihin*: "Chapter on the explanation of some of the martyrs" meaning those other than those killed in the cause of Allah. The one killed in the cause of Allah is the highest type of martyr. As for the other martyrs, as the author (may Allah have mercy on him) indicated, they are martyrs in the Hereafter, in the rulings of the Hereafter, not in the rulings of this world. This is clarified by the fact that the martyr killed in the cause of Allah is a martyr in this world and the Hereafter. So he is a martyr in this world: when he is killed and dies, he is not washed, not shrouded, no prayer is performed over him, and he is buried as is. The two angels who question him about his Lord, his religion, and his Prophet do not come to him. He is not washed so that the trace of his blood remains, the blood of the one killed in the cause of Allah, so that it remains until he comes on the Day of Resurrection with his wound oozing blood, the color of blood and the scent of musk. For this reason, the scholars said: "It is forbidden to wash him and it is forbidden to wash his blood" rather, he remains as he is. He is not shrouded in a new shroud but is shrouded in the clothes in which he was killed, so that he comes on the Day of Resurrection in these clothes. No prayer is performed over him because the prayer is intercession, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said regarding the prayer over the dead:Sahih Muslim 948 The one killed in the cause of Allah does not need anyone to intercede for him, because his intercession is that he exposed his neck to the enemies of Allah to exalt the word of Allah. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) explained the reason for his not being tested in his grave, saying: Sunan an-Nasa'i 2053Sahih (Darussalam) meaning: that is sufficient as a test. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke the truth: he is shrouded in his clothes to come with them on the Day of Resurrection, and no prayer is performed over him. Similar to this in some respects is the man who dies in a state of ihram. If he dies in a state of ihram, he is washed with water and lote leaves, not embalmed, no perfume is applied to him, his head is not covered, and he is not shrouded in clothes other than the clothes of ihram he is wearing, because he is resurrected on the Day of Resurrection calling out the talbiyah, saying: "Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik" (Here I am, O Allah, here I am). And the martyr is resurrected on the Day of Resurrection with his wound pouring blood, but its color is the color of blood and its scent is the scent of musk. So this martyr, in the rulings of this world, the martyr in the cause of Allah is kept away from these things: he is not washed, not shrouded in a new shroud but shrouded in his clothes, no prayer is performed over him, and he is buried. The two angels do not come to him to question him about his Lord, his religion, and his Prophet, because this is the greatest trial and test for him and a proof of his truthfulness. As for the Hereafter, Allah the Exalted said: [Ali 'Imran 3:169-171] As for the remaining martyrs mentioned in the hadith, they are martyrs in the Hereafter, not in this world. And yet, they are not equal to those killed in the cause of Allah, but they are martyrs, and each has degrees according to what they did. The one who dies of the plague, the one who dies of a stomach ailment, the one who drowns, and the one killed in the cause of Allah—this one is a martyr in this world and the Hereafter. The fifth? Yes, the one who dies under a collapse. These are four: the one who dies of the plague, meaning the one who died of the plague. The plague is a deadly, contagious epidemic, may Allah grant us safety. If it strikes a land, it destroys it. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said regarding the plague: Sunan al-Bayhaqi 10:1583 Because how can you flee from Allah the Mighty and Majestic? And look at a people, thousands of them, [Al-Baqarah 2:243] and they died while they were thousands, having fled from death. But Allah the Exalted intended to make it clear to them that there is no escape from Allah the Glorious and Exalted. Allah said to them: "Die," so they died, then He revived them to make it clear that there is no escape from the divine decree of Allah the Mighty and Majestic. But we do the causes that we were commanded to do, and not those we were forbidden from. For this reason, he said: Sahih Muslim 2218c This one who dies of the plague is a martyr. The second: the one who dies of a stomach ailment. The one who dies of a stomach ailment is the one who is afflicted with a disease of the abdomen, and it resembles, may Allah know best, what is now called in the *Ghashiyah* (a covering) that strikes a person in his abdomen and then he dies. If a person dies from this, he is a martyr. The third: the one who drowns, whether by great rains, or falling into a river or the sea or the like, he is among the martyrs in the Hereafter. For this reason, a person is commanded to learn swimming; a person is commanded to learn swimming so that if such things happen, he can protect himself from them. As for the fourth: he is the one who dies from a collapse, meaning a man whose house or wall or the like collapses on him, he is a martyr. Because all of these died from sudden, fatal accidents. Can their like be measured to them, such as one who dies in an accident or a collision or the like? May Allah know best. They may be measured to this, and it may be said there is no difference between a wall collapsing or a car overturning, because any accident in which a person dies, it is ruled that the one who died from this accident is a martyr. But we do not assert this with certainty, because matters of reward, punishment, or recompense do not allow for analogical reasoning. So the result is that there are martyrs other than those killed in the cause of Allah. And among them is also the one who dies in the cause of Allah, even if he is not killed; he is a martyr, but a martyr in the Hereafter, like a man who went out with the mujahideen and died a natural death. This one is also among the martyrs, but a martyr of the Hereafter. As for this world, he is washed, shrouded, prayed over, and buried with the people, like the martyrs mentioned by the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), who are those who died from a collapse, drowning, plague, or stomach ailment. And success is from Allah.
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
