The Shaykh : Then he mentioned the hadiths, beginning with the hadith of Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him), that he, meaning the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), said: Sahih Muslim 1037a Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) wills in His creation what He wills of good and evil, but all His wills are good, whereas His decrees contain both good and evil. All His judgments are good, whereas His judged matters contain both good and evil. People are vessels; some are those in whose hearts Allah the Exalted knows good, so He grants them success, and some are those in whose hearts Allah knows evil, so He causes them to fail, refuge with Allah. Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) said: [As-Saf 61:5] As for the one in whose heart Allah knows good, Allah grants him success. When Allah knows good in a person's heart, He intends good for him, and when He intends good for him, He grants him understanding in his religion and gives him of the knowledge of His Shari'ah what He has not given to any other person. This indicates that a person should strive with utmost effort to gain understanding in the religion, because when Allah the Exalted wills something, He prepares its causes. Among the causes of understanding in the religion is that you learn and strive to attain this great rank, that Allah intends good for you. So strive for understanding in the religion of Allah. Understanding in the religion is not just knowledge, but knowledge and action. For this reason, the Salaf warned against the abundance of readers and the scarcity of jurists. Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "How will it be with you when your readers increase and your jurists decrease?" If a person knows something of the Shari'ah of Allah but does not act upon it, he is not a jurist, even if he memorizes the largest book of jurisprudence by heart and understands it, but does not act upon it. Such a person is not called a jurist; he is called a reader, but not a jurist. The jurist is the one who acts upon what he knows: he knows first, then acts second. This is the one who has been granted understanding in the religion. As for the one who knows but does not act, he is not a jurist, but is called a reader and not a jurist. For this reason, the people of Shu'ayb said to Shu'ayb: [Hud 11:91] because they were deprived of good due to Allah's knowledge of the evil in their hearts. So strive for knowledge and strive to act upon it, so that you may be among those for whom Allah intends good. I ask Allah the Exalted to make me and you among those who have been granted understanding in the religion of Allah, who have known and taught and benefited.
