Chapter on the remembrance of Allah the Exalted while standing, sitting, and lying down: Allah the Exalted said

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
He (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “Chapter on the remembrance of Allah the Exalted while standing, sitting, and lying down. Allah the Exalted said
(190) Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding. (191) Who remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], "Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire. إن في خلق السموات والأرض واختلاف الليل والنهار لآيات لأولي الألباب * الذين يذكرون الله قياما وقعودا وعلى جنوبهم
[Ali 'Imran 3:190-191]
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said:
Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) used to mention Allah’s Name (praise Him) at all times.
Bulugh al-Maram 78
Muslim narrated it. And Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
If anyone of you on having sexual relations with his wife said (and he must say it before starting) 'In the name of Allah. O Allah! Protect us from Satan and also protect what you bestow upon us (i.e. the coming offspring) from Satan, and if it is destined that they should have a child then, Satan will never be able to harm that offspring.
Sahih al-Bukhari 141
Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim”

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his book *Riyad al-Salihin*: “Chapter on the remembrance of Allah the Exalted while standing, sitting, and lying down” meaning that a person should remember Allah the Exalted in every state, whether standing, sitting, or lying on his side. Then he (may Allah have mercy on him) cited the words of Allah the Exalted:
(190) Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding. (191) Who remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], "Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire. إن في خلق السماوات والأرض واختلاف الليل والنهار لآيات لأولي الألباب * الذين يذكرون الله قيامًا وقعودًا وعلى جنوبهم
[Ali 'Imran 3:190-191]
in the creation of the heavens and the earth, meaning in the essence of the sky and the earth and the wonders of Allah’s creation contained within them
signs for those of understanding.
[Ali 'Imran 3:190]
for those of understanding who perceive through the signs of Allah what Allah the Exalted has in these signs of wisdom and secrets. The sky is vast and high, and the earth is flat and made easy for creation, containing signs from the signs of Allah the Exalted, such as seas, rivers, trees, and others, by which one can infer their Creator (Exalted and Majestic is He). As for the alternation of night and day, it is the alternation in length and shortness, heat and cold, ease and hardship, safety and fear, misery and well-being, and so on. In these as well are great signs. When a person studies history and sees the fluctuations and differences of night and day, he sees wondrous signs of Allah that increase his faith. And His saying:
Who remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides
[Ali 'Imran 3:191]
this is the evidence: they remember Allah in every state, standing, sitting, and on their sides, in every state. Likewise, he (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned the hadith of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) who said:
Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) used to mention Allah’s Name (praise Him) at all times.
Bulugh al-Maram 78
in all his states, meaning in all his times; in every time he remembers Allah while standing, sitting, and lying down. So much so that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recommended that a person remember Allah when he has intercourse with his wife, saying:
If anyone of you, when having sexual intercourse with his wife, says: (Bismillah, Allahumma jannibnash-Shaitana wa jannibish-Shaitana ma razaqtana) 'In the Name of Allah, O Allah! Protect me from Shaitan and protect what you bestow upon us from Shaitan' - then if Allah decrees that they should have a child, Shaitan will not be able to harm him.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1092Sahih (Darussalam)
In this is evidence that you should increase in the remembrance of Allah in every state, except that the scholars said it is not befitting to remember Allah the Exalted in filthy places, such as places for relieving oneself, toilets, and the like, out of respect for the remembrance of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) from these places. This is what some scholars mentioned, and Allah knows best.
