The reader: Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
He (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Chapter on the miracles of the awliya (close friends of Allah) and their excellence, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with them both)
The people of the Safah were poor people, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said once: "Whoever has food for two, let him go with a third, and whoever has food for four, let him go with a fifth or a sixth" — or as he said. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came with three, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went with ten. Abu Bakr dined with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then stayed until he prayed the 'Isha' prayer, then returned. He came after a time had passed of the night as Allah willed. His wife said: "What kept you from your guests?" He said: "Did you not feed them?" She said: "No, until you came, and they had been offered food." He said: "So I went and hid." Then he said: "O Ghunthar, cut off and curse." He said: "Eat, may it be wholesome, and by Allah I will never feed him again." He said: "By Allah, we did not take a mouthful except that it increased from beneath it more than it was, until they were full, and it became more than it was before." Abu Bakr looked at it and said to his wife: "O sister of the Banu Faras, what is this?" She said: "The light of my eyes, it is now three times more than it was before." So Abu Bakr ate from it and said: "That was only from Satan, meaning his oath." Then he ate a mouthful from it and carried it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so it remained with him. There was a covenant between us and a group of people, and the term passed, so we separated, twelve men, with each man a group of people, Allah knows how many with each man, and they all ate from it.
In a narration:
and swore not to eat of it!" I hid myself, and he called me, "O ignorant (boy)!" Abu Bakr's wife swore that she would not eat of it and so the guests or the guest swore that they would not eat of it till he ate of it. Abu Bakr said, "All that happened was from Satan." So he asked for the meals and ate of it, and so did they. Whenever they took a handful of the meal, the meal grew (increased) from underneath more than that mouthful. He said (to his wife), "O, sister of Bani Firas! What is this?" She said, "O, pleasure of my eyes! The meal is now more than it had been before we started eating'' So they ate of it and sent the rest of that meal to the Prophet. It is said that the Prophet (ﷺ) also ate of it.
Sahih al-Bukhari 6141
In a narration:
Abu Bakr invited a group of people and told me, "Look after your guests." Abu Bakr added, I am going to visit the Prophet (ﷺ) and you should finish serving them before I return." `Abdur-Rahman said, So I went at once and served them with what was available at that time in the house and requested them to eat." They said, "Where is the owner of the house (i.e., Abu Bakr)?" `Abdur-Rahman said, "Take your meal." They said, "We will not eat till the owner of the house comes." `Abdur-Rahman said, "Accept your meal from us, for if my father comes and finds you not having taken your meal yet, we will be blamed severely by him, but they refused to take their meals . So I was sure that my father would be angry with me. When he came, I went away (to hide myself) from him. He asked, "What have you done (about the guests)?" They informed him the whole story. Abu Bakr called, "O `Abdur Rahman!" I kept quiet. He then called again. "O `Abdur-Rahman!" I kept quiet and he called again, "O ignorant (boy)! I beseech you by Allah, if you hear my voice, then come out!" I came out and said, "Please ask your guests (and do not be angry with me)." They said, "He has told the truth; he brought the meal to us." He said, "As you have been waiting for me, by Allah, I will not eat of it tonight." They said, "By Allah, we will not eat of it till you eat of it." He said, I have never seen a night like this night in evil. What is wrong with you? Why don't you accept your meals of hospitality from us?" (He said to me), "Bring your meal." I brought it to him, and he put his hand in it, saying, "In the name of Allah. The first (state of fury) was because of Satan." So Abu Bakr ate and so did his guests.

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
This story is in the chapter on the miracles of the awliya (close friends of Allah) which Anas narrated about what happened with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). That is, a group of the Muhajirun used to come to Madinah while they were poor, having nothing on them but their clothes and nothing with them. And there was a Safah in the mosque where they would take shelter, then Allah would make it easy for someone to take them with him to his house and feed them. On one night, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever has food enough for two persons, should take a third one (from among them), and whoever has food enough for four persons, should take a fifth
Sahih al-Bukhari 3581
And so on, meaning he ordered his companions to take the people of the Safah with them to feed them. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was the most generous of people; he went with ten, peace and blessings be upon him, and Abi Bakr went with four, and the people went, some with three and some with four, according to their circumstances. Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) took his guests to his house and instructed his son 'Abd al-Rahman to attend to their hospitality, and he went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), because he (may Allah be pleased with him) was the most attached of people to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), always being with him. So he went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and dined with him, then returned to his family after some of the night had passed. He asked them: "Did you feed your guests?" They said: "No." So he thought that they were the ones who delayed their guests until Abi Bakr came, so he began to curse and scold, meaning he was severe in cursing them. And he called his son 'Abd al-Rahman: "O 'Abd al-Rahman," but he did not answer him out of fear of him, because he (may Allah be pleased with him) was severe with his family in disciplining them. So he did not answer him out of fear that he would speak harshly to him or hit him or something like that, until he swore upon him that if he was hearing him, he should answer him. So he answered him, and he said to him: "Why did you delay the hospitality of the people?" They said: "Ask your guests." So he asked them, and they said: "Yes, they offered us hospitality, but we refused until you came." So he (may Allah be pleased with him) swore that he would not eat. He said: "By Allah, I will not eat", meaning that since you delayed for my sake, then I will not eat. So he swore that he would not eat, and the guests swore that they would not eat out of respect for him. So now we have two oaths: the oath of Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) that he would not eat, and the oath of the guests that they would not eat. Which is more worthy to be fulfilled: the oath of Abi Bakr and the guests not eating, or the oath of the guests and them eating? The second is more worthy. So he (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "That is only from the devil," meaning that his swearing that he would not eat is from the devil. Then he ate and the guests ate. But the miracle that occurred was that when one of them took a mouthful from the vessel, the vessel rose, and instead of the mouthful, there was more of it in the same vessel. Where did this come from? From Allah (Mighty and Majestic), as a miracle for Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), who is the best of the awliya (close friends of Allah) of this Ummah (the Muslim community) absolutely, because he is the best of this Ummah. Then they finished, and what remained in the vessel was more than what was in it before. So Abi Bakr took it and went with it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called some people to it and they ate. Abi Bakr only carried it to show the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) how this matter was from Allah (Mighty and Majestic), in whose hand is the dominion of all things, and when He wills something, He only says to it "Be," and it is. The point of this hadith is this miracle for a wali (close friend of Allah) from among the awliya (close friends of Allah), who is Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). And we testify that he is a wali (close friend of Allah) from among the awliya (close friends of Allah), and that he is the best of the awliya (close friends of Allah) absolutely, except for the prophets and messengers. Because he (may Allah be pleased with him) is from the Siddiqin (the truthful ones) in the second rank of the righteous of the nations. Allah the Exalted said:
And whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger - those will be with the ones upon whom Allah has bestowed favor of the prophets, the steadfast affirmers of truth, the martyrs and the righteous
[An-Nisa 4:69]
So he (may Allah be pleased with him) is the best of the Siddiqin since Allah created Adam until the Day of Resurrection. And he is from the awliya (close friends of Allah), and this is one of his miracles (may Allah be pleased with him). And in the hadith there are many benefits, which we will come to some of them, if Allah wills, in the next lesson. And Allah is the One who grants success.
