The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
We have previously mentioned that the author (may Allah have mercy on him) related the story of Abu Bakr with his guests and the miracle contained therein, and that when Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) brought the food for him and his guests to eat, each one did not take a mouthful except that the food increased from beneath what he took until they left, and what was in the bowl was more than what had been in it before. We promised that we would speak about whatever benefits are facilitated from it. We mentioned yesterday that it contains evidence of the virtue of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and that he is among the awliya (close friends of Allah), and we mentioned that Abu Bakr is the best of the awliya after the prophets, because Abu Bakr is among the Siddiqin (the truthful ones), who are in the second rank of the categories of those upon whom Allah has bestowed favor: the prophets, the truthful ones, the martyrs, and the righteous. Among its benefits is that if a person becomes angry for a reason that necessitates anger, he is not blamed for it, because Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) became angry and cursed and swore, until his son 'Abd al-Rahman hid from him out of fear of him, and he kept calling him and saying: "O Ghanthar", and Ghanthar is the stupid, ignorant one. So this is evidence that if a person becomes angry for a reason that necessitates anger, he is not blamed for it, and it does not detract from his virtue or his rank. And in it is also that there is no harm in a person describing his son or one over whom he has authority as stupid and ignorant if he does an action that indicates he is stupid and ignorant. And in it is that it is the custom of people, even in the old covenant, that the guest and the host would swear oaths, saying: "By Allah, you will eat," and "By Allah, I will not eat," and "By Allah, you will enter," and "By Allah, I will not let you enter," but they would swear by Allah, they would swear by Allah. As for what many of the ignorant people do today, swearing by divorce, this is a great error. Many of the Bedouin, if a guest comes to them and the guest fears that the host will slaughter a sacrificial animal for him, he says: "I see divorce upon me, and haram (forbidden) upon me, and my wife is like my mother, and I seek refuge in Allah, if you slaughter a sacrificial animal for me." This is haram (forbidden) and not permissible
Whoever is swearing, let him swear by the One by whom he swears, or let him be silent. من كان حالفًا فليحلف بمن بالله أو ليصمت
This is not permissible. As for swearing by Allah, this has been the custom since ancient times, and it is among the customs and traditions of the Arabs. And with this, it is better that if you swear upon a person, you combine it with the word "if Allah wills." You say: "By Allah, if Allah wills," because if you say "By Allah, if Allah wills," you benefit from two great benefits. The first benefit is that Allah will facilitate the matter for you, and the second benefit is that if it is not facilitated, there is no expiation upon you. So always combine your oath with the saying "if Allah wills" so that you are safe from breaking the oath and so that the matter is facilitated for you. Have you not heard the news of Sulayman (peace be upon him)? Sulayman, the prophet of Allah, said one day:
By Allah, I will certainly mount ninety women tonight, and each one of them will give birth to a boy who will fight in the cause of Allah. والله لأطوفن الليلة على تسعين امرأة تلد كل واحدة منهن غلامًا يقاتل في سبيل الله
meaning he would have intercourse with ninety women, each woman giving birth to a boy who would fight in the cause of Allah. Look at the prophets' love for fighting; he wished that Allah would grant him this large number of children to fight in the cause of Allah. He did not say to help him in trade, in farming, or in this world, but to fight in the cause of Allah. So it was said to him: "Say 'if Allah wills,'" but he did not say "if Allah wills," because he was certain and determined. But
And you do not will except that Allah wills وما تشاؤون إلا أن يشاء الله
[Al-Insan 76:30]
he had intercourse with ninety women that night, and Allah had given him strength. So what happened? One of them gave birth to half a person, stripped, Glory be to Allah the Great, a sign from the signs of Allah, for Allah the Mighty and Majestic to show him that the matter is in the hand of Allah the Mighty and Majestic. Our Prophet Muhammad (may the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him) said:
If he had said: 'If Allah wills,' he would not have broken his vow لو قال إن شاء الله لم يحنث ولقاتلوا في سبيل الله
Sunan an-Nasa'i 3856Sahih (Darussalam)
Look, meaning if he had said "if Allah wills," the matter would have been easy and it would have happened. And when the Prophet (peace be upon him) was approached by Quraysh, they said: "Inform us about a group who were in the old time, who left their land and were in a cave," or they said: "Tell us about Dhul-Qarnayn." He said:
Tomorrow I will inform you. غدًا أحدثكم
And the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not know about their story and did not know, because he did not live to see it, and there were no reliable histories. He said:
Tomorrow I will inform you. غدًا أخبركم
The next day, the revelation did not come down, because the Messenger thought that the revelation would come down at night. The revelation did not come down the second day, nor the third, nor the fourth, nor the fifth. It remained for fifteen days that the revelation did not come down to him. And this would be severe for the Messenger (peace be upon him), because he had promised Quraysh, his enemies, that he would inform them the next day, and he did not inform them. So Allah revealed the story and it was said to him:
(23) And never say of anything, "Indeed, I will do that tomorrow," (24) Except [when adding], "If Allah wills." ولا تقولن لشيء إني فاعل ذلك غدًا إلا أن يشاء الله
[Al-Kahf 18:23-24]
So the matter is in the hand of Allah. For this reason, we say: if you want to break an oath, that is, if you swear upon yourself, upon your children, upon your guest, upon any person, combine it with the word "if Allah wills" to obtain these two benefits, and what are they? The facilitation, that Allah facilitates the matter and gives you what you swore upon, and the second is that if the matters are not fulfilled, there is no expiation upon you.
