Among the miracles mentioned, or rather transmitted, by al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) in his book *Riyad al-Salihin* is what Jabir ibn Samurah narrated regarding the story of Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him). Sa'd was known for his supplications being answered, meaning that Allah granted him a karamah (a miracle granted to a righteous person), which is that the Exalted One answers his du'a' (supplication) when he calls upon Him. The Commander of the Faithful, 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, appointed him as the governor of the people of Kufah. When the Muslims conquered Iraq, they established provincial capitals, making Basra and Kufah the most famous in Iraq. Then the Commander of the Faithful appointed governors for them, appointing Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas to Kufah. The people of Kufah complained to the Commander of the Faithful, 'Umar, until they said that he did not know how to pray, even though he was a noble Companion whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had promised Paradise. So 'Umar sent for him, and he came and said that the people of Kufah had complained, even saying that he did not know how to pray. Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) informed him that he used to pray for them the prayer of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), mentioning the 'Isha' prayer, which, Allah knows best, was the one specified by these complainers. He said: "I used to pray for them the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), and I did not fall short of it", meaning I did not leave it; I would linger in the first two rak'ahs of 'Isha' and hasten through the last two. 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "That is the opinion I hold of you, O Abu Ishaq", so 'Umar vouched for his character, because this was the opinion of him: that he knew how to pray and that he prayed for his people, whom he was appointed to govern, the prayer of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). However, 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) investigated the matter, because he bore responsibility and knew the weight of that responsibility. He sent men to the people of Kufah to ask them about Sa'd and his conduct. These men did not enter a mosque and ask about Sa'd without them speaking well of him, until these men came to the mosque of Banu 'Abs and asked them. A man stood up and said: "If you have asked us, then this man: "did not judge fairly in disputes, did not lead the raiding party, and did not distribute the spoils equally". Their statement that he did not lead the raiding party means he did not go out for jihad; that he did not distribute the spoils equally means when there was ghanimah (war spoils); and that he did not judge fairly in disputes means when he judged between people. So they accused him of these three accusations. He said: "If you have said this, I will invoke three curses upon you". He cursed him, asking that Allah the Exalted lengthen his life and his poverty and expose him to trials; we ask Allah for safety. Three great curses, but he (may Allah be pleased with him) added a condition, saying: "If this servant of Yours is a liar who stood up for show and reputation", meaning without truth. Allah answered his supplication, so this man lived a long life, aged until his eyebrows fell over his eyes from old age, and he was poor and exposed to trials, such that in this state, being so old, he would expose himself to the young women, meaning the girls, exposing himself to them in the markets, making gestures at them, may Allah protect us. And he would say about himself: "I am an old, deluded man, and Sa'd's curse has befallen me". This is among the miracles by which Allah honored Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him).
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) transmitted, in the context of the hadiths in the chapter on the miracles of the awliya (close friends of Allah) and their virtue: "Narrated by Jabir ibn Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
Jabir bin Samurah (May Allah be pleased with them) said: The inhabitants of Kufah complained to 'Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) against Sa'd bin Abu Waqqas (May Allah be pleased with him) and 'Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) appointed 'Ammar (May Allah be pleased with him) as Governor of Kufah in his place. Their complaint was that he did not even conduct As-Salat (the prayers) properly. 'Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) sent for Sa'd and said to him: "O Abu Ishaq, the people claim that you do not offer the Salat properly." Sa'd replied: "By Allah! I observe Salat according to the Salat of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and I make no decrease in it. I prolong Qiyam (standing) in the first two Rak'ah in Maghrib and 'Isha' prayers and shorten in the last ones." 'Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) said: "This is what I thought of you, O Abu Ishaq!" Then he sent with him a man (or some men) to Kufah to investigate the matter about him (from the people of Kufah). The inquiry was conducted in every mosque and all the people in these mosques praised him; but in the mosque of the Banu 'Abs, a man, with the name of Usamah bin Qatadah and surname Abu Sa'dah, stood up and said, "Sa'd bin Abu Waqqas did not participate in Jihad and he did not distribute the spoils equitably and did not judge justly." On this Sa'd said: "I shall make three supplications in respect of him: O Allah! If this slave of Yours is a liar and seeker of notoriety, please prolong his life and lengthen his period of adversity and afflict him with trials." (And so did it happen.) Thereafter, when the man was asked about his condition he would say, "I am an old man afflicted with trials and overtaken by the curses of Sa'd." 'Abdul-Malik bin 'Umair (a subnarrator) said: I saw this man with eyebrows hung over his eyes as a result of his old age and he walked aimlessly, following young girls and winking at them. The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
