The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) transmitted, in the context of the hadiths in the chapter on what is supplicated for the sick person: "From Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: 'The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to visit me and said:
O Allah! Cure Sa'd. O Allah! Cure Sa'd. O' Allah! Cure Sa'd.
Riyad as-Salihin 904
' Narrated by Muslim. And from Uthman ibn Abi al-'As (may Allah be pleased with him), that he complained to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) of a pain he felt in his body, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him:
to put his hand on the part of his body which was sore and say three times “In the name of God,” and seven times, “I seek refuge in God’s might and power from the evil of what I am experiencing and trying to avert.”
Mishkat al-Masabih 1533
' Narrated by Muslim. And from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:
He who visits a sick person who is not on the point of death and supplicates seven times: As'alullahal-'Azima Rabbal-'Arshil-'Azimi, an yashfiyaka (I beseech Allah the Great, the Rubb of the Great Throne, to heal you), Allah will certainly heal him from that sickness.
Riyad as-Salihin 906
' Narrated by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi, who said: 'A good hadith,' and al-Hakim said: 'A sound hadith according to the conditions of al-Bukhari.'"

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
These hadiths concern what is said when a person visits a sick person. Al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned them in his book *Riyad al-Salihin*. The hadith of Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas states that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) visited him, meaning he visited him during his illness, and said:
O Allah! Cure Sa'd. O Allah! Cure Sa'd. O' Allah! Cure Sa'd.
Riyad as-Salihin 904
three times. In this hadith is evidence that it is a recommended practice (sunnah) for a person to visit a sick Muslim. It also indicates the good character of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) and his treatment of his Companions, for he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to visit the sick among them and supplicate for them. It also indicates that it is recommended to supplicate with this du'a: "O Allah, heal so-and-so," naming the person, "O Allah, heal so-and-so, O Allah, heal so-and-so," three times, for this is a cause for the healing of the sick person. It also contains evidence that a person should repeat the supplication, for the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), when he supplicated, would supplicate three times, and when he greeted someone and did not understand the greeting, he would greet back three times. Repeating the supplication three times is among the prescribed matters, just as the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) would say in prayer:
Rabbighfir li, Rabbighfir li
Sunan Ibn Majah 897Sahih (Darussalam)
He would repeat it in this way, and likewise the supplication for the sick person. Then the author mentioned the hadith of Uthman ibn Abi al-'As, in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked Uthman, who was complaining of an illness in his body, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to say this du'a:
In the name of Allah three times
In the name of Allah, in the name of Allah, in the name of Allah, and to place his hand on the place of pain, then say:
a’udhu bi’izzatil-lahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa uhadhiru
Sunan Ibn Majah 3522Sahih (Darussalam)
If he says it with certainty and belief in it, and that he will benefit from it, then the pain will be soothed by the permission of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). This is more effective than physical medicine, more effective than pills, drinks, and injections, because you are asking for or seeking refuge in the One in whose hand is the dominion of the heavens and the earth, the One who sent down this illness, and He is the One who protects you from it. Likewise, the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas states that if a person visits a sick person whose time of death has not arrived, meaning it is not the illness of death, and says:
I ask the Great, Lord of the Mighty Throne, to heal you and cure you
Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 47:17
seven times, nothing prevents Allah from curing him of that illness. This is if the time of death has not arrived; but if the time of death has arrived, neither medicine nor recitation is of benefit, for Allah the Exalted said:
For every nation is a [specified] term. When their time has come, then they will not remain behind an hour, nor will they precede [it]." لكل أمة أجل إذا جاء أجلهم فلا يستأخرون ساعة ولا يستقدمون
[Yunus 10:49]
And success is from Allah.
