Explanation of Riyad al-Salihin-81b

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may the prayers and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) transmitted in the context of the hadiths in the chapter on the prohibition of lying "from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him both) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said
He who narrates a dream which he has not seen will be put to trouble to join into a knot two barley seeds which he will not be able to do; and he who seeks to listen to the talk of a people (secretly) will have molten lead poured into his ears on the Day of Resurrection; and he who makes a picture (of people or other creatures with a soul, such as animals and insects) will be (severely punished), and he will be asked to infuse spirit therein, which he will not be able to do.
Riyad as-Salihin 1544
"

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Al-Hafiz al-Nawawi (may Allah be Exalted) said in the book Riyad al-Salihin, in the chapter on the prohibition of lying, regarding what he transmitted from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him both), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said
Whoever claims to have seen a dream which he did not see, will be ordered to make a knot between two barley grains which he will not be able to do
Sahih al-Bukhari 7042

This means whoever lies about a dream, saying, "I saw such and such in my dream," when he is lying, then on the Day of Resurrection he will be commanded to tie a knot between two barley grains. It is known that if a person tries, no matter how much he tries, to tie a knot between two barley grains, he will not be able to, but he will continue to be punished and it will be said, "You must tie a knot between them." This is a warning that indicates that claiming to have seen a dream one did not see is among the major sins.
This happens with some foolish people who talk and say, "I saw such and such last night," just to make people laugh. This is forbidden for him. And more severe than that is if he says, "I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and he said to me such and such," or the like of that. That is more severe and more severe because it is lying about the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). As for one who claims to have seen a dream he actually saw, there is nothing wrong with that. But a person should know that what a person sees in his sleep is divided into three categories: A category that is good, and the person rejoices and is glad about it. This should not be told to anyone but those he loves, because a person has many envious people. If he sees a good dream and tells it to someone who does not love him, that person may plot against him in a way that prevents him from the good he saw. This is what the brothers of Yusuf did. Yusuf ibn Ya'qub (peace and blessings be upon him and upon his father) said to his father
O my father, indeed I have seen [in a dream] eleven stars and the sun and the moon; I saw them prostrating to me." يا أبت إني رأيت أحد عشر كوكبا والشمس والقمر رأيتهم لي ساجدين
[Yusuf 12:4]
meaning, I saw these eleven stars, meaning stars, and the sun and the moon, all prostrating to me. He said
He said, "O my son, do not relate your vision to your brothers or they will contrive against you a plan. Indeed Satan, to man, is a manifest enemy. يا بني لا تقصص رؤياك على إخوتك فيكيدوا لك كيدا إن الشيطان للإنسان عدو مبين
[Yusuf 12:5]
So do not tell anyone who is not among your loved ones and friends who wish for you what they wish for themselves. Do not tell them what you see of a good dream.
The second is a bad dream. This second category is what a person sees in his sleep: a bad dream that disturbs and frightens him. This should not be told to anyone, ever, not a friend or an enemy. And when you get up from your sleep, spit on your left side three times and say, "I seek refuge in Allah from the evil of Shaytan and from the evil of what I saw." And if you want to continue sleeping, sleep on the other side, on the other side, meaning not on the side on which you saw what you disliked, for it will not harm you.
So whoever sees what he dislikes should do the following:
First, if he wakes up, he spits on his left side three times and says, "I seek refuge in Allah from the evil of Shaytan and from the evil of what I saw."
If he wants to continue sleeping, he sleeps on the other side.
When he gets up, he does not tell anyone about it, because that does not harm him. If he does this, then that does not harm him, by the permission of Allah.
The Companions used to see dreams that made them ill and disturbed them. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) informed them of this hadith, they did what he guided them to do and found relief. Many people are afflicted and look for evil for themselves. They see a dream they dislike and then try to relate it to people so they can interpret it for them. This is a mistake. If you see a dream you dislike, you have a remedy with you, one of the best remedies, indeed the best remedy, which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) taught you.
The third category is dreams that are jumbled, having no head or foot. A person sees contradictory things and sees strange things. These should not be told to anyone, nor should one pay attention to them. And
A man reported to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) a story, saying: "O Messenger of Allah, I saw in a dream that a man cut off my head. The head went off wandering, and I went after it, pursuing it." The Prophet (may Allah's prayer and peace be upon him) said to him: "Do not tell people about what Satan plays with you in your sleep."
These are from Shaytan; they cut off your head and you chase them. These have no basis, they have no head. So do not pay attention to such things, nor tell anyone about them.
As for one who sees the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), if he sees the Messenger in the known description that was described in the Prophetic biography, and sees him in a good form, this indicates good for the one who saw it, and that he has emulated him in a good way. And if he sees him otherwise, let him examine himself, let him examine himself. If he sees, for example, that he is talking to the Messenger, but the Messenger is turning away from him, or the Messenger has turned and left him, or he sees him in a form that is not good, meaning, for example, in his clothes or his cloak or his lower garment or the like of that, let him examine himself, for he is falling short in following the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him and his family).
As for the second issue,
If anyone listened to the talk of some people, when they do not like him to do that, then molten led will be poured into his ears on the Day of Resurrection.
Bulugh al-Maram 16:73
meaning a person listens to people who dislike him hearing them, then molten brass will be poured into his ears on the Day of Resurrection. The scholars said that al-ank is molten lead, and refuge is sought in Allah. Molten lead with the fire of Hell is sixty-nine times greater than the fire of this world. It is poured into his ears because he listened to people who disliked him hearing them, whether they disliked him hearing them for a valid reason or not, because some people dislike others hearing them even if the speech contains no danger, no cursing, or nothing, but they do not want anyone to hear. This happens with some people, may Allah grant us safety. You find, for example, if he sees two people talking, he takes the mushaf and sits near them, then he pretends to read from the mushaf as if he is reading, while he is listening to them, and they dislike that. This man will have molten brass poured into his ears on the Day of Resurrection, and he will be punished with this punishment, and refuge is sought in Allah. And as for the third part of the hadith, which is image-making, the discussion of it will come, if Allah wills, in a future lesson. And success is from Allah.
