How to distinguish between a vision and a dream?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : How can a person distinguish between a vision and a dream?

The Shaykh : Yes, generally, a vision is something that brings joy to the believer, opens his chest, and is focused. As for the dream, it is from Satan; it comes with parables that it strikes for the sleeper, disturbing him, terrifying him, and disturbing his rest. There is also what resembles a dream that has no basis or meaning. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about this, and a man said to him:
O Messenger of Allah, I saw in a dream that my head was cut off and it ran away, so I kept running after it يا رسول الله إنّي رأيت في المنام أنّ رأسي قد قُطِع وهرب، فجعلت أشتدّ وراءه
meaning he was running after his head. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him:
Do not tell people about Satan’s playing with you in your sleep لا تحدّث النّاس بتلاعب الشّيطان بك في منامك
So generally, a dream has no basis or meaning; it is only to terrify the person. For this reason, if you see a vision that you dislike, you should seek refuge in Allah from the evil of Satan and from the evil of what you saw, and you should not tell anyone about it. If you wake up from your sleep, turn over to the other side. If it returns to you, get up, perform wudu, and pray, for it will go away from you by the permission of Allah.
