Explanation of Riyad al-Salihin-86a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) transmitted in the context of the hadiths in the chapter “The Prohibition of Showing Off” from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah say
The first person to be judged on the Day of Resurrection will be a man who was martyred. He will be brought before Allah, and He will make him aware of His blessings, and he will acknowledge them. He will say: ‘What did you do with them?’ He will say: ‘I fought for You until I was martyred.’ He will say: ‘You lie. You fought only to be called brave. And that has been said.’ Then he will be ordered to be dragged on his face and thrown into the Fire. And a man who learned knowledge and taught it, and recited the Qur’an. He will be brought before Allah, and He will make him aware of His blessings, and he will acknowledge them. He will say: ‘What did you do with them?’ He will say: ‘I learned knowledge and taught it, and I recited the Qur’an for You.’ He will say: ‘You lie. You learned knowledge to be called a scholar, and you recited the Qur’an to be called a reciter. And that has been said.’ Then he will be ordered to be dragged on his face and thrown into the Fire. And a man whom Allah enriched and gave him from various types of wealth. He will be brought before Allah, and He will make him aware of His blessings, and he will acknowledge them. He will say: ‘What did you do with them?’ He will say: ‘I did not leave any path in which You love to be spent except that I spent in it for You.’ He will say: ‘You lie. You did it to be called generous. And that has been said.’ Then he will be ordered to be dragged on his face and thrown into the Fire.

And from Ibn ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)
Some people told me, "We visit our rulers and we tell them things contrary to those which we say when we depart from them." `Abdullah bin `Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) replied: "In the era of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) we considered this to be an act of hypocrisy."
Riyad as-Salihin 1618
. Narrated by al-Bukhari. "

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
We have previously spoken about what concerns showing off (riya’), and that Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) disowns the hypocrite who shows off and nullifies his deed. Here in this lesson, we speak about the hadith of Abu Hurayrah regarding the first people to be judged on the Day of Resurrection, and they are three categories: a student, a fighter, and a donor.
The student learned knowledge and taught the Qur’an and taught it. Then Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) brought him to Him on the Day of Resurrection
So Allah made him aware of His blessings, and he acknowledged them.
and he acknowledged and confessed, so they asked him
What did you do?
meaning regarding the gratitude for this blessing
So he said: “I learned knowledge and recited the Qur’an for You.” So Allah said to him: “You lie. You learned knowledge to be called a scholar, and you recited the Qur’an to be called a reciter.”
not for Allah, but for the sake of showing off
It has been narrated on the authority of Sulaiman b. Yasar who said: People dispersed from around Abu Huraira, and Natil, who was from the Syrians. said to him: O Shaikh, relate (to us) a tradition you have heard from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). He said: Yes. I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: The first of men (whose case) will be decided on the Day of Judgment will be a man who died as a martyr. He shall be brought (before the Judgment Seat). Allah will make him recount His blessings (i. e. the blessings which He had bestowed upon him) and he will recount them (and admit having enjoyed them in his life). (Then) will Allah say: What did you do (to requite these blessings)? He will say: I fought for Thee until I died as a martyr. Allah will say: You have told a lie. You fought that you might be called a" brave warrior". And you were called so. (Then) orders will be passed against him and he will be dragged with his face downward and cast into Hell. Then will be brought forward a man who acquired knowledge and imparted it (to others) and recited the Qur'an. He will be brought And Allah will make him recount His blessings and he will recount them (and admit having enjoyed them in his lifetime). Then will Allah ask: What did you do (to requite these blessings)? He will say: I acquired knowledge and disseminated it and recited the Qur'an seeking Thy pleasure. Allah will say: You have told a lie. You acquired knowledge so that you might be called" a scholar," and you recited the Qur'an so that it might be said:" He is a Qari" and such has been said. Then orders will be passed against him and he shall be dragged with his face downward and cast into the Fire. Then will be brought a man whom Allah had made abundantly rich and had granted every kind of wealth. He will be brought and Allah will make him recount His blessings and he will recount them and (admit having enjoyed them in his lifetime). Allah will (then) ask: What have you done (to requite these blessings)? He will say: I spent money in every cause in which Thou wished that it should be spent. Allah will say: You are lying. You did (so) that it might be said about (You):" He is a generous fellow" and so it was said. Then will Allah pass orders and he will be dragged with his face downward and thrown into Hell.
Sahih Muslim 1905a

And this is evidence that it is obligatory for the student of knowledge in seeking knowledge to be sincere in his intention for Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and that he should not care whether people say he is a scholar, a shaykh, a professor, a mujtahid, or the like. This matter does not concern him; what concerns him is only the pleasure of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), preserving the Shari’ah and teaching it, removing ignorance from himself, and removing ignorance from the servants of Allah, so that he may be written among the martyrs, whose rank is after the rank of the truthful ones, and those whom the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) takes charge of
those will be with the ones upon whom Allah has bestowed favor of the prophets, the steadfast affirmers of truth, the martyrs and the righteous
[An-Nisa 4:69]
As for the one who learns for other than that, to be called a scholar, a mujtahid, a scholar, or the like of such statements, then his deed is nullified, refuge is sought in Allah, and he is the first to be judged, dragged on his face into the Fire, and he will be called a liar on the Day of Resurrection and rebuked.
As for the second, he is a man who fought, a man who fought in the cause of Allah and was killed. So when the Day of Resurrection came
He was brought before the Lord, Mighty and Majestic, and He made him aware of His blessings, and he acknowledged them.
meaning the blessings, that He (Glorified and Exalted is He) supported him, prepared him, provided for him, and strengthened him until he reached this rank, to the point that he fought. Then he was asked
What did you do with them? He said, “My Lord, I fought for You.” It will be said, “You lied. You fought so that it would be said, ‘So-and-so is brave and bold.’” And that was said. Then he was ordered to be dragged on his face into the Fire.
refuge is sought in Allah. And likewise, the fighters in the cause of Allah have multiple intentions. One who fights so that the word of Allah is the highest is in the cause of Allah, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said. And one who fights for nationalism is in the cause of the taghut. And one who fights out of tribal loyalty is in the cause of the taghut. And one who fights to gain worldly benefit is in the cause of the taghut, because Allah the Exalted says
Those who believe fight in the cause of Allah, and those who disbelieve fight in the cause of Taghut
[An-Nisa 4:76]
But if a person fights for nationalism or patriotism, not for the sake of nationalism and patriotism, but for the sake of protecting his Muslim homeland from the aggression of disbelievers, then he is in the cause of Allah, because the result of protecting the lands of the Muslims is that the word of Allah is the highest. And likewise, the result of protecting the Muslims is that the word of Allah is the highest. But if a person fights only to kill in this battle, is he in the cause of Allah? The answer is no. And this is the intention of many of the youth who go in order to kill, and they say, “We kill martyrs.” It is said to them, “No, go and fight so that the word of Allah is the highest. If you remain, do not go in order to kill, but in order that the word of Allah is the highest. And then, if you are killed in this cause, you are in the cause of Allah.”
As for the third
A man upon whom Allah bestowed wealth.
and he used to give charity and give and spend. So when the Day of Resurrection came
And he was brought before Allah, and He made him aware of His blessings, and he acknowledged them. Then He asked him what he did with them, and he said, “I gave charity.”
and I did and I did
It will be said, “You lied, but you did it so that it would be said, ‘So-and-so is generous.’”
meaning generous, meaning a generous man
and so it was said. Then will Allah pass orders and he will be dragged with his face downward and thrown into Hell.
Sahih Muslim 1905a

This is also one of the three with whom the Fire will be kindled on the Day of Resurrection.
And in this is evidence that it is obligatory for a person to be sincere in his intention for Allah in all that he spends of wealth, body, knowledge, or otherwise. And that if he does something by which he seeks the Face of Allah and diverts it to other than that, then he is sinful for it. And success is from Allah.
