The Shaykh : Similarly, this came in the authentic hadith that Imam Muslim narrated in his "Sahih" from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: These are the scholars, the mujahids, and the wealthy. It was supposed that they would be in the highest ranks of Paradise, but they are the opposite of what some people imagine, thinking that if a person is a scholar, that is enough for him to go straight to Paradise, or if he is a mujahid, or if he is wealthy and spends his money on the poor and the needy. This is not the case in an absolute sense, because we mentioned earlier that righteous deeds require two conditions: that they be done in accordance with the Sunnah, and that they be sincere for Allah (Mighty and Majestic). There is no doubt that seeking knowledge is something commanded in the Book and the Sunnah, and jihad in the path of Allah is likewise, and spending wealth in the path of Allah is likewise. But these three, whose full story you will hear, neglected one of the two conditions mentioned above, which is sincerity to Allah (Mighty and Majestic) in all these types of worship: knowledge, jihad, and zakah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said, completing the previous hadith: Here, corruption and deceit entered the knowledge of this type of scholar, in that they taught people but did not seek thereby the Face of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) and His pleasure, but rather intended that it be said of them, "So-and-so, what Allah willed, is a scholar; there is no one like him among the scholars." He (peace be upon him) said, completing the hadith: Meaning: Allah has seen that this scholar has achieved what he intended, which is for people to say, "So-and-so is a scholar," and it has been said. So his reward will be that the Lord of the Worlds says to the guards of Hell, "Take him to the Fire." Who is he? The scholar about whom Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said regarding his like: [Al-Mujadila 58:11] So this scholar was not raised to the ranks of Paradise, but was cast into the lowest depth of the Fire because he did not intend the Face of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) with his knowledge. Then it will be said to the mujahid in the path of Allah: This mujahid was also supposed to be in the high ranks of the Gardens, but he followed his first companion because he shared with him in the lack of sincerity in that worship; the first in his knowledge and the second in his jihad. Then the wealthy man will be brought and it will be said to him: Abu Hurayrah said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The first ones for whom the Fire will be kindled on the Day of Resurrection
The scholar, the mujahid, and the wealthy
The scholar will be brought on the Day of Resurrection and it will be said to him: "O My servant, what did you do with what you taught?" He will say: "O my Lord, I spread it in Your path." It will be said to him: "You lied. You only did it or taught it so that people would say: So-and-so is a scholar."
And it has been said
Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees
O My servant, what did you do with the strength I bestowed upon you? He will say: "O my Lord, I fought in Your path." It will be said to him: "You lied. You only fought so that people would say: So-and-so is brave, so-and-so is a hero." And it has been said; take him to the Fire.
O My servant, what did you do with the wealth I bestowed upon you? He will say: "O my Lord, I spent it in Your path." It will be said to him: "You lied. You only spent it so that people would say: So-and-so is generous." And it has been said; take him to the Fire.
These three are the first ones for whom the Fire will be kindled on the Day of Resurrection
