Chapter on the Prohibition of Qa'z and the Permissibility of Shaving the Entire Head for Men but Not for Women

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
He (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Chapter on the Prohibition of Qa'z. It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited qa'z. Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim."
And from him (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a boy whose head had been partially shaved, with some hair left, so he prohibited them from doing that and said: "Shave it all, or leave it all."
Narrated by Abu Dawud with a sound chain according to the conditions of al-Bukhari and Muslim.
And from 'Abdullah ibn Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with them both):
The Prophet waited three days before visiting the family of Ja'far (Ja'far b. Abu Talib was killed at Mu'ta in the year 7 A.H). He said, “Do not weep for my brother after today,” and then said, “Call my brother’s children to me.” When we had been brought like a number of chickens he said, “Call me a barber,” and then ordered him to shave our heads.
Mishkat al-Masabih 4463
Narrated by Abu Dawud with a sound chain according to the conditions of al-Bukhari and Muslim.
And from 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prohibited a woman from shaving her head.
Riyad as-Salihin 1641
Narrated by al-Nasa'i. "

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
This chapter was mentioned by the author (may Allah have mercy on him) in *Riyad al-Saliheen* to clarify the ruling on qa'z, and he mentioned therein several hadiths, among them:
The hadith of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited qa'z.
And qa'z is shaving part of the head and leaving part of it, whether it is from one side or from all sides, or from the top, the right, the left, the back, or the front. The important point is that if one shaves part of the head and leaves part of it, this is qa'z, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited it. Among its indicators is the statement of Anas:
we did not see any cloud or any patch of it
Sahih Muslim 897a
meaning a piece of cloud.
And he mentioned the other hadith of Ibn 'Umar:
That a boy was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) whose head had been partially shaved, with some hair left, so he said: "Shave it all, or leave it all."

Then he mentioned the hadith of the children of Ja'far ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) when he was killed as a martyr.
So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave them three days, then came to them and said: "Do not mourn my brother after today."
He only gave them three days so that their hearts would be at ease and the grief and sorrow in their chests would pass. Then, after the three days, he prohibited them from mourning Ja'far, and his young sons were brought to him.
So he ordered their heads to be shaved, and their heads were shaved.
This was so that they would not become dirty, because as is well known, the bodies and hair of young boys become dirty. For that reason, their heads were shaved, and this applies if they are males.
As for females,
For the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited a woman from shaving her head.
for this reason, when a baby is born, his head is shaved on the seventh day along with the 'aqiqah sacrifice if he is a male. As for a female, her head is not shaved.
