The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
He (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Chapter on the prohibition of keeping a dog except for hunting, herding, or farming. Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:Riyad as-Salihin 1688 Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim. In another narration: one qirat.
And Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 1575c Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
And in a narration by Muslim:Sahih Muslim 1575a "
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said in his book Riyad al-Salihin: "Chapter on the prohibition of keeping a dog except for farming, herding, or hunting"
The dog is well known, and it comes in many colors, but the black one is specifically described as a devil, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said when
If a black dog passes in front of the one praying, it breaks his prayer, and he must restart it from the beginning. Likewise, if it passes between the one praying and his sutrah, it breaks the prayer, and he must restart it from the beginning.
The black dog’s game is not lawful according to the majority of scholars, even if it is trained and its owner sends it out and mentions the name of Allah over it, because it is a devil. And if the disbelievers from among the children of Adam do not have their game made lawful, except for the Jews and the Christians, then this devil, the dog, does not have its game made lawful either. As for the other dogs of various colors, they do not invalidate the prayer, and their game is permissible under the conditions known to the scholars.
As for keeping a dog and a person possessing one, this is forbidden, and indeed it is one of the major sins, and I seek refuge in Allah. Because the one who keeps a dog, except for what is excluded, will have two qirats deducted from his reward every day. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 945a So the one who keeps a dog without it being one of the excluded types will have two qirats deducted from his reward every day, like Mount Uhud. So
This indicates that keeping dogs is one of the major sins, except for what is excluded: hunting, farming, and herding. Hunting is the trained dog with which a person hunts. Its game is lawful if it is trained such that it runs when sent, stops when called back, and does not eat when it catches the prey, and the person mentions the name of Allah when sending it. Then its game is lawful, and the person keeps it for need and benefit.
Likewise, for farming, a person keeps a dog to protect his crops so that livestock do not enter and spoil them. The third is herding; a person keeps a dog for his livestock, whether they are camels, cows, or sheep, because it protects them from wolves and protects them from thieves, for if it sees someone it dislikes, it barks, and its owner becomes alert. Also, if a person needs to guard his wealth, such as a person in a remote place with no security personnel around him, he keeps a dog. There is no harm in this, because this is protection of wealth, like farming. And anything other than that is forbidden.
And among the wisdom of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, is that the evil are for the evil ones, and the evil ones are for the evil. It is said that the disbelievers from the Jews, Christians, communists, and others in the East and West, each one has a dog, and I seek refuge in Allah, and he carries it with him. And when he buys meat, he gives the good meat to the dog and eats the bad meat himself. And every day he cleans it with soap and other detergents, even though if he cleaned it with all the waters of the seas and the soap of the whole world, it would not become pure, because its impurity is intrinsic, and intrinsic impurity is not purified except by destroying it and removing it completely. But this is from the wisdom of Allah, and through this, the wisdom of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, is known, that these wicked people become accustomed to what is evil, just as they also become accustomed to the inspiration of Satan, for their disbelief is from the inspiration of Satan, without doubt, and from the command of Satan. For Satan commands obscenity and what is wrong, and commands disbelief and misguidance. So they are slaves to Satan and slaves to their desires, and they are also wicked people who become accustomed to evil things. We ask Allah for guidance for us and for them.
The important point is that keeping a dog without a Sharia reason is a major sin among the major sins. Then, the impurity of this dog is the most impure of impurities, the most impure impurity in animals, the impurity of the dog, because if it licks a vessel, the vessel is not purified except by washing it seven times, one of which is with soil. Other impurities, if the substance of the impurity is removed, the place becomes pure. But this one, no, seven washings are necessary, one of which is with soil. And success is from Allah.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.

He who keeps a dog other than one for guarding the fields or herds or hunting, will lose two Qirat every day out of his rewards.
من اقتنى كلبا إلا كلب صيد أو ماشية فإنه ينقص من أجره كل يوم قيراطانAnd Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who kept a dog would lose out of his deeds equal to one qirat every day. except (one kept) for watching the field or herd.
من أمسك كلبا فإنه ينقص من عمله كل يوم قيراط إلا كلب حرث أو ماشيةAnd in a narration by Muslim:
He who kept a dog which is neither meant for hunting nor for watching the anitmals nor for watching the fields would lose two qirat every day out of his reward
