Then they asked him about 'azl, whereupon he said. That is the secret (way of) burying alive ثم سألوه عن العزل، فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: ذلك الوأد الخفي

He (peace and blessings be upon him) benefited us with his saying:
That is the hidden infanticide ذلك الوأد الخفي

That infanticide is of two types: apparent and hidden.
The apparent type is what people used to do in the pre-Islamic age of ignorance, where a man would bury his daughter alive out of fear of disgrace. We mentioned that a group of Arabs would bury their male and female children alive out of fear of poverty. Both of these actions are invalid and abominable, and they contradict even the nature of animals. Even the nature of animals is not like this; you find a beast lifting its hoof from its offspring for fear of harming it, and defending the offspring. If you were to approach a cat while it is nursing its young, what would it do to you?
It would attack you, attacking out of fear for its young. Then you hear it calling its young to feed, making a specific sound meaning "enter your dwelling" so that no harm befalls them. And this is a beast! How, may Allah protect us, does a human being come and bury his daughter alive or kill his child out of fear of poverty?
As for the hidden form of infanticide: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) explained it as coitus interruptus. A man’s coitus interruptus with his wife is hidden infanticide, because it involves something that prevents the existence of children, since coitus interruptus is among the causes of not having children. Even though, if Allah (Mighty and Majestic) wills to create a child, no one can prevent it, it is undoubtedly among the causes of preventing children. Thus, it has a resemblance to infanticide, even though it is not like infanticide, because infanticide involves burying the child while it is alive, whereas this prevents life from entering it. It prevents life, and there is a difference between prevention and removal.
The scholars say: Prevention or repulsion is easier than removal.
