The Ruling on Residing Among the Polytheists
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: We are Muslim students studying in America for periods ranging from six months to four years. We came here to study of our own free will—meaning we were not sent by any institution—and studying here in America is no different from studying in our own countries except for the acquisition of the English language. What is the ruling on our staying in this country to study? May Allah reward you with good.
(A. S. G. America)
A: If any of you has knowledge and insight into the religion of Allah that enables him to call to Allah, teach people what is good, dispel doubt from himself, and display his religion among the disbelievers around him, then there is no blame on him; because his residence, given the circumstances mentioned, and his provision of the knowledge he needs will benefit him and others, and Allah may guide a large number of people through him if he strives in calling, is patient, and is sincere in his intention for Allah . As for the one who does not have knowledge and insight, or does not have patience for the call, or fears for himself falling into what Allah has forbidden, or is unable to display his religion by calling to the oneness of Allah, warning against associating partners with Him, and explaining that to those around him, it is not permissible for him to reside among the polytheists, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sunan Abi Dawud 2645 and because of the danger he faces in this residence, and success is from Allah.

I am not responsible for any Muslim who stays among polytheists
