The Ruling on Attacking People of Religion and Describing Them as Extremists

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: Some people try to attack the youth of the awakening on the pretext that there is extremism and rigidity among them. What is your Eminence’s comment on that?

A: It is obligatory to encourage the youth to do good and to thank them for their activity in good, while guiding them to gentleness and wisdom and not to be hasty in matters; because the youth and non-youth have an increase in zeal, and they fall into what is not befitting.
So it is obligatory to guide the Shaykh and the youth to be careful in matters and to seek the truth in all their actions, so that matters from them fall in their proper place.
And a man saw some of the wrongs in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and his zeal for Allah carried him to say to the doer of the wrong: “By Allah, Allah will not forgive you.” So Allah said: :
Who is the one who swears upon me that I will not forgive so-and-so? I have indeed forgiven him and I have nullified your deed.من ذا الذي يتألى علي ألا أغفر لفلان؟ إني قد غفرت له وأحبطت عملك
Narrated by Imam Muslim in his Sahih.
And that is only because he exceeded the limit of the Shari'ah by his certainty that Allah will not forgive the doer of this wrong, and that necessitates for the believer to be careful and to beware of the danger of the tongue and the intensity of zeal.
And the point is that the youth, the Shaykh, and others, all of them have the obligation of forbidding the wrong, but with gentleness and wisdom and adherence to the texts of the Shari'ah, so they do not exceed the limit of the Shari'ah and become extremists like the Khawarij and the Mu'tazilah and those who follow their path, and they do not fall short and become harsh and lenient regarding the command of Allah, but they seek the middle in their speech and their forbidding of the wrong and their seeking of the causes that make their speech acceptable and influential, and they avoid the means that may cause aversion to accepting their speech and the society does not benefit from them, by the saying of Allah: :
And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you.وَلَوْ كُنْتَ فَظًّا غَلِيظَ الْقَلْبِ لانْفَضُّوا مِنْ حَوْلِكَ
[Ali 'Imran 3:159]
the verse [Al Imran: 159] and the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the authentic hadith:
Whenever there is compassion in something, it adorns it, and whenever it is removed from something it disgraces it.إن الرفق لا يكون في شيء إلا زانه، ولا ينزع من شيء إلا شانه
Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 27:14
and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
O Allah, whoever takes charge of any matter concerning my Ummah and is lenient with them, be lenient with him; and whoever takes charge of any matter concerning my Ummah and makes things difficult for them, make things difficult for him.اللهم من ولي من أمر أمتي شيئًا فرفق بهم فارفق به، ومن ولي من أمر أمتي شيئًا فشق عليهم فاشقق عليه
Narrated by Muslim in his Sahih from the hadith of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her).
