Al-Khidr died before the Prophet’s ﷺ mission

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: In my village, there is a man who claims that he met Al-Khidr (peace be upon him) in the Holy Mosque and that Al-Khidr gave him dates. He also claims that he treats patients. For this reason, people flock to him day and night to have him treat them by rubbing the site of the pain in exchange for some money. Is this true? Or is it a type of sorcery and exploitation of the naive and simple?

A: As for Al-Khidr, the correct view is that he died a long time before the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) mission. There is no truth to his existence; rather, all of this is false and he does not exist. This is the correct view held by the meticulous scholars among the people of knowledge. Al-Khidr (peace be upon him) died before the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) mission, and indeed before the mission of Isa (peace be upon him).
The correct view is that Al-Khidr was a prophet, as indicated by the apparent meaning of the Noble Qur’an. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said in an authentic hadith:
I am the nearest of all the people to the son of Mary, and all the prophets are paternal brothers, and there has been no prophet between me and him (i.e. Jesus).أنا أولى الناس بابن مريم، والأنبياء أولاد عَلات، وليس بيني وبينه نبي
Sahih al-Bukhari 3442
This indicates that Al-Khidr died before that. Even if we assume he was not a prophet but a righteous man, he would have met the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). If we assume he did not meet him, he would have died a hundred years ago, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said near the end of his life:
Have you seen this night of yours ? No one of those who are on the surface of the earth will survive at the ends of one hundred years.أرأيتكم ليلتكم هذه فإن على رأس مائة سنة منها لا يبقى ممن هو على ظهر الأرض أحد
Sunan Abi Dawud 4348Sahih (Al-Albani)
This indicates that anyone who was alive at that time would not remain after a hundred years, based on the text of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that they would die before the hundred years were completed.
The conclusion is that Al-Khidr has died and does not exist. The one who claims to have seen him is either a liar, or the one who said it was Al-Khidr lied to him, and it was not Al-Khidr, but rather a devil from among the devils of humans or jinn.
As for this man who treats people by rubbing the site of the illness, his case must be examined. If he is one of the good people known for uprightness and faith, and he recites the Qur’an for them and supplicates to Allah for them, then there is no harm, even if he takes some fee. However, if he is not known for good but is suspected of evil, he must be prevented and people must not be sent to him. He must be stopped by the authorities in the town, because such a person is usually a charlatan, a sorcerer, one who uses jinn, or a liar who takes people’s money unjustly. We ask Allah for safety and well-being.
