The Difference Between Menstrual Blood and Irregular Non-Menstrual Bleeding

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: Some women do not distinguish between menstruation and irregular non-menstrual bleeding, as the blood may continue with them, causing them to stop praying for the entire duration of the bleeding. What is the ruling in this matter?

A: Menstruation is the blood that Allah has decreed for the daughters of Adam every month, generally, as stated in the authentic hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
The woman with irregular non-menstrual bleeding has three conditions in this regard:
The first is that she is a beginner. In that case, she must sit out (refrain from prayer) for the duration of the blood she sees each month, so she does not pray or fast, and it is not permissible for her husband to have intercourse with her until she becomes pure, provided the duration is fifteen days or less, according to the majority of scholars.
If the blood continues with her for more than fifteen days, she is a woman with irregular non-menstrual bleeding. She must consider herself menstruating for six or seven days, by investigating and following the pattern of her similar relatives, if she does not have a way to distinguish between menstrual blood and other blood.
If she has a way to distinguish, she must refrain from prayer, fasting, and her husband’s intercourse with her for the duration of the blood that is distinguished by darkness or a foul smell. Then she performs the full ritual bath and prays, on the condition that this does not exceed fifteen days. This is the second condition of the woman with irregular non-menstrual bleeding.
The third condition is that she has a known custom. In that case, she sits out for the duration of her custom, then performs the full ritual bath and the ablution for each prayer when its time enters, as long as the blood is with her. She is permissible for her husband until the time of her custom comes in the next month.
This is a summary of what the hadiths from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) state regarding the woman with irregular non-menstrual bleeding.
Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar, the author of *Bulugh al-Maram*, and Al-Majd Ibn Taymiyyah, the author of *Al-Muntaqa*, mentioned this, may Allah have mercy on them both.
