The mu'adhdhin heard while reciting the Qur'an: should he repeat after him or continue reciting?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: If the mu'adhdhin calls the adhan and a person is reciting the Qur'an, is it better for him to respond by saying what the mu'adhdhin says? Or is his engagement with the Qur'an considered better, given the principle of prioritizing the more meritorious over the less meritorious?

A: The Sunnah is that if one is reciting and hears the adhan, he should respond to the mu'adhdhin, in compliance with the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
When you hear the mu’adhdhin repeat what he says, then invoke a blessing on me, for everyone who invokes one blessing on me will receive ten blessings from God. Then ask God to give me the wasila , which is a rank in paradise fitting for only one of God’s servants, and I hope that I may be the one. If anyone asks that I be given the wasila , he will be assured of my intercession.
Mishkat al-Masabih 657
narrated by Muslim in his Sahih from the hadith of Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both).
And in the two Sahihs, from the hadith of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) , the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When you hear the Mu'adhdhin then say what he saysإذا سمعتم المؤذن فقولوا مثل ما يقول
Sunan an-Nasa'i 678Sahih (Darussalam)
And in Sahih al-Bukhari, from Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever after listening to the Adhan says, 'Allahumma Rabba hadhihi-dda` watit-tammah, was-salatil qa'imah, ati Muhammadan al-wasilata wal-fadilah, wa b`ath-hu maqaman mahmudan-il-ladhi wa`adtahu' [O Allah! Lord of this perfect call (perfect by not ascribing partners to You) and of the regular prayer which is going to be established, give Muhammad the right of intercession and illustriousness, and resurrect him to the best and the highest place in Paradise that You promised him (of)], then my intercession for him will be allowed on the Day of Resurrectionمن قال حين يسمع النداء: اللهم رب هذه الدعوة التامة والصلاة القائمة، آت محمدا الوسيلة والفضيلة، وابعثه مقاما محمودا الذي وعدته؛ حلت له شفاعتي يوم القيامة
Sahih al-Bukhari 614
Al-Bayhaqi added with a good chain:
You do not break Your promiseإنك لا تخلف الميعاد
Muwatta Malik 20:132
And because responding to the mu'adhdhin is a recommended practice that is missed if one continues reciting, whereas recitation is not missed; its time is ample. May Allah guide them all.
