The Ruling on Joking with Words Containing Disbelief or Open Sinfulness

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: Joking with words containing disbelief or open sinfulness is a matter present in some Muslim societies. It would be desirable if Your Eminence would shed light on this matter, and the position of students of knowledge and callers to Allah regarding it.

Answer: There is no doubt that joking with lies and types of disbelief is among the greatest of what is wrong and among the most dangerous things to be found among people in their gatherings. It is obligatory to be cautious of that, and Allah has warned against it in His saying:
And if you ask them, they will surely say, "We were only conversing and playing." Say, "Is it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you were mocking?"
[At-Tawbah 9:65]
Do not make excuses; you have disbelieved after your faith [Surat al-Tawbah: 65-66].
And many of the Salaf (may Allah have mercy on them) said that it was revealed regarding a group who said among themselves during one of their journeys with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "We have not seen people like these companions of ours; they are more greedy in their bellies, more lying in their tongues, and more cowardly in the encounter." So Allah revealed this verse regarding them. And it is authentic from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
Woe to him who lies in his talk to make the people laugh, Woe to him! Woe to him!ويل للذي يحدث فيكذب ليضحك به القوم ويل له ثم ويل له
Bulugh al-Maram 16:80
Narrated by Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi, and al-Nasa'i with a sound chain.
So it is obligatory upon the people of knowledge and upon all believing men and women to be cautious of that and to warn against it, because of the great danger, the great corruption, and the dire consequences in it. May Allah save us and the Muslims from that, and guide us and them to His straight path. Indeed, He is the All-Hearing, the Responsive.
