From where did the issue of narrating hadith by meaning originate?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : My teacher, from where did this issue originate? From the weakness of precision, meaning the weakness of the narrator's precision.

The Shaykh : You say, when did it originate?

The questioner : I mean, from where did this issue originate? I mean, from the weakness of precision or the weakness of the narrator's precision.

The Shaykh : I do not know if I understood your question. It originated from the fact that they observed that many of the hadiths reported from more than one Companion differ in their wording but agree in their meaning. When they observed this difference, they said that these Companions, who had been given hearts and minds that were very strong and retentive, must have considered it permissible to narrate the hadith by meaning, subject to the condition mentioned earlier. And so they mentioned that one of the Companions, whose name has escaped my memory at the moment, said: "If we narrate the hadith to you by meaning, that is sufficient for you." I believe the answer to your question is this observation.

The questioner : Yes, my teacher.

The Shaykh: Yes.
