The ruling on tayammum for one who takes a little water with him during an outing
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: Some Muslims go out of Riyadh on days off for a picnic, without intending to travel, and they take a little water with them. When it is time for prayer, they perform tayammum instead of using water, claiming that the water is scarce, even though they are able to search for water or carry it with them during the trip. Is it permissible for them to perform tayammum in this case? And if it is not permissible, what is the ruling on praying without wudu'?
A: If they go out for a picnic and prayer time arrives, and they have only a little water, just enough for their need, and the water is far from them, they should pray with tayammum. However, if they carry it with them, that is better, if it is feasible. If the water is near them, it is obligatory for them to perform wudu'. If it is far from them and it is difficult for them to go to it, or they would waste their time because of its distance, there is no blame on them if they perform tayammum. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) would perform tayammum when the water was far from them.
As for the Friday prayer, it is not obligatory for them if they are far from the town and do not hear the adhan, at a distance of a farsakh or more.
