The Samaniyyah Sufi Path and Combining Dhikr with Beating the Duff and Other Things

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: We have in Sudan a shaykh who has many followers who devote themselves to serving him and obeying him and traveling to him, believing that he is one of the awliya (close friends of Allah). They take from him the Samaniyyah Sufi path. There is a large dome at his place for his father, and these followers seek blessing from it and place in it whatever their hearts offer in the form of vows. They combine their dhikr with beating drums and hand drums and poetry. This year, their shaykh ordered them to visit the grave of another shaykh, so men and women traveled in a hundred cars. How do you guide them?
A: This is a great abomination! And a great evil! For traveling to visit graves is an abomination. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
One should not undertake journeys except to three mosques: al-Masque al-Haram (in Makkah ), the Aqsa mosque, or this mosque (in Madinah).
Bulugh al-Maram 5:58
.
Furthermore, drawing near to the people of graves with vows, or sacrifices, or prayers, or by supplicating to them and calling upon them for aid, is all shirk (associating partners with Allah) with Allah . It is not permissible for a Muslim to supplicate to the occupant of a grave, even if he is great like the messengers (peace be upon them). It is not permissible to call upon them for aid, just as it is not permissible to call upon idols, or trees, or stars for aid.
As for their playing with hand drums and drums and drawing near to Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) by that: it is from the abominable religious innovations. Many of the Sufis worship by that, and it is all an abomination and a religious innovation, and it is not what Allah has prescribed. The hand drum is only prescribed for women at weddings, specifically to display the marriage and to make it known that it is a marriage and not fornication.
Likewise, from the religious innovations and means of shirk (associating partners with Allah) is building over graves and making them into mosques. For the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade plastering graves, building over them, and sitting on them. As Imam Muslim narrated in the Sahih from Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) , he said:
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) forbade that the graves should be plastered or they be used as sitting places (for the people), or a building should be built over them.
Sahih Muslim 970a
. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Allah cursed the Jews and the Christians that they took the graves of their prophets as mosques
Sahih Muslim 529
. Therefore, graves must be open and exposed, with no building over them. It is not permissible to seek blessing from them or to rub against them, just as it is not permissible to supplicate to their occupants or call upon them for aid, or make vows for them, or slaughter for them. All of this is from the practice of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance. It is obligatory upon the people of Islam to beware of that.
It is obligatory upon the people of knowledge to advise this shaykh and to inform him that this action is invalid and an abomination. And that his encouraging people to call upon the dead for aid and to supplicate to them other than Allah is from major shirk (associating partners with Allah), and refuge is sought in Allah from that. It is obligatory upon Muslims not to imitate him, not to follow him, and not to be deceived by him. For worship is the right of Allah alone, and He is the One who is supplicated to and hoped for. Allah the Exalted said:
And [He revealed] that the masjids are for Allah, so do not invoke with Allah anyone.
[al-Jinn: 18]. And He (Glorified and Exalted is He) said:
And whoever invokes besides Allah another deity for which he has no proof - then his account is only with his Lord. Indeed, the disbelievers will not succeed.
[al-Mu'minun: 117]. So He called them disbelievers for their supplication to other than Allah, from the jinn, the angels, the people of graves, the stars, or the idols. All of these, their supplication alongside Allah is major shirk (associating partners with Allah). Allah the Exalted says:
And do not invoke besides Allah that which neither benefits you nor harms you, for if you did, then indeed you would be of the wrongdoers.'"وَلا تَدْعُ مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ مَا لا يَنْفَعُكَ وَلا يَضُرُّكَ فَإِنْ فَعَلْتَ فَإِنَّكَ إِذًا مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ
[Yunus: 106], meaning the polytheists. And it is upon everyone who is able to denounce this abomination to participate in that. And it is upon the state, if it is Muslim, to prevent that and to teach people what Allah has prescribed for them and made obligatory upon them from the matters of religion, until this shirk (associating partners with Allah) and this abomination are removed. We ask Allah for guidance for everyone.
