Performing the prayer for a patient before undergoing surgery

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: It is known that after a patient undergoes surgery, he remains under anesthesia until he regains consciousness, and after that, he remains in pain for several hours. So, should he pray before entering the operating room when the time for prayer has not yet entered? Or should he delay the prayer until he is able to perform it with physical presence, even if that is delayed by a day or more?
A: The first obligation is upon the doctor to look into the matter. If it is possible to delay the start of treatment until the time enters, such as the time for Dhuhr, then the patient prays Dhuhr and Asr together when the time for Dhuhr enters. Likewise, at night, he prays Maghrib and Isha together if the sun sets before the start of the operation. However, if the treatment is in the late morning, the patient is excused. When he regains consciousness, he makes up what is due from him, even if it is after a day or two. Whenever he regains consciousness, he makes up what is due from him, and praise be to Allah, and he owes nothing. This is like a sleeper who, when he wakes up, becomes alert, and his consciousness returns to him, prays the times that he missed in order. He arranges them: Dhuhr, then Asr, and so on, until he has made up what is due from him. This is based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever sleeps through a prayer or forgets it, let him pray it when he remembers it; there is no expiation for it except that.من نام عن الصلاة أو نسيها فليصلها إذا ذكرها، لا كفارة لها إلا ذلك
agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
Fainting due to illness or treatment has the same ruling as sleep if it does not last long. If it lasts more than three days, the obligation to make up the prayers is dropped from him, and he becomes in the ruling of the insane until his mind returns to him. He then begins to perform the prayer after his mind returns to him. This is based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
The Pen has been lifted from three : from the sleeping person until he awakens, from the minor until he grows up, and from the insane person until he comes to his senses.رفع القلم عن ثلاثة: عن النائم حتى يستيقظ، وعن الصغير حتى يبلغ، وعن المجنون حتى يفيق
Sunan Ibn Majah 2041Hasan (Darussalam)
And making up the prayers was not mentioned regarding the child or the insane person. Rather, it was established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that the command to make up prayers is for the sleeper and the one who forgets. And Allah is the guarantor of success.
