Does the patient pray before the operation or after it?
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: The brother / A. M. M from Makkah al-Mukarramah says in his question: It is known that after a patient undergoes an operation, he remains under anesthesia, and after regaining consciousness, he remains in pain for several hours. So, does he pray before the operation is performed, even though the time for prayer has not yet entered? Or does he delay the prayer until he is able to perform it with sensory presence, even if that is delayed by a day or more? Please give us a ruling, and may you be rewarded.
A: It is obligatory for the doctor to look into the matter. If it is possible to delay the start of the operation until the time enters, such as the time for Dhuhr, then the patient prays Dhuhr and 'Asr combined if the time for Dhuhr enters. Likewise, at night, he prays Maghrib and 'Isha' combined if the sun sets before the operation begins. However, if the treatment is in the late morning, the patient is excused if there is a need to perform the operation before the time enters. If he regains consciousness, he must make up what is due from him, even if it is after a day or two. Whenever he regains consciousness, he makes up what is due from him, and praise be to Allah, and he owes nothing, just like the sleeper. If he regains consciousness, becomes alert, and his mind returns to him, he prays the times that were missed in order, arranging them as Dhuhr, then 'Asr, and so on, until he has made up what is due from him. This is based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim.
Fainting due to illness or treatment has the same ruling as sleep if it lasts a long time. If it lasts more than three days, the obligation to make up the prayers is dropped from him, and he becomes in the ruling of the insane until his mind returns to him, at which point he begins performing the prayer after his mind has returned to him. This is based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sunan Ibn Majah 2041Hasan (Darussalam) and making up the prayers was not mentioned regarding the child or the insane person, whereas the command to make up prayers was established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) only regarding the sleeper and the one who forgets.
And success is from Allah.
