The Cosmic and Legislative Causes and Their Connection to Their Effects

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : So, whoever desires happiness, let him seek it; whoever desires a long life, let him seek it; whoever desires abundance in provision, let him seek it. This is because Allah (Mighty and Majestic), by His wisdom, has connected the effects to their causes. Here is something that must be remembered and to which attention must be drawn: when we speak in general terms about these causes, saying that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) has connected the effects to their causes, we must remember that some of these causes have a definite effect, while others are contingent upon the will of Allah. I will summarize this and then elaborate. Certainly, whoever believes and does good deeds is happy, for Allah does not break His promise. Likewise, whoever disbelieves and does good deeds is wretched. However, this is not the case with some other causes, regarding which Allah (Mighty and Majestic) has explicitly stated that they are not of the type of causes that produce the effect with certainty. This is what we were discussing regarding provision.
Whoever loves to have his lifespan extended and his provision expanded, let him maintain his family ties
Our Lord (Mighty and Majestic) says in the Noble Qur'an:
Whoever should desire the immediate - We hasten for him from it what We will to whom We intend
[Al-Isra 17:18]
Look here, there are two conditions:
Whoever should desire the immediate - We hasten for him from it what We will
[Al-Isra 17:18]
not what He wills, but
for whom We will لِمَنْ نُرِيدُ
for whom Allah wills. It is for whom Allah wills, not for everyone who desires. Whoever desires the immediate
We hasten for him from it what We will
[Al-Isra 17:18]
; that is, whoever takes hold of the natural, cosmic causes. I ask you to pay attention: it is those who take hold of the natural, cosmic causes, not the legislative causes, which include maintaining family ties, good character, good neighborliness, and the like. It is those who take hold of the natural, cosmic causes in which the believer and the disbeliever, the righteous believer and the wicked one, share. Here the mentioned verse applies:
We hasten for him from it what We will
[Al-Isra 17:18]
And the opposite of that is:
But whoever desires the Hereafter and exerts the effort due to it while he is a believer - it is those whose effort is ever appreciated [by Allah].
[Al-Isra 17:19]
Those who strive for the Hereafter, their striving is appreciated and preserved, and they will reach what they sought by taking the means they adopted. As for those who took the natural, cosmic means, perhaps, perhaps, perhaps, perhaps. But it is not so in the case of what we mentioned earlier from the two "Sahih" hadiths:
Whoever loves to have his lifespan extended and his provision expanded, let him maintain his family ties
Whoever maintains his family ties will reach what he seeks, as mentioned by the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) in this hadith. Likewise,
Good character and good neighborliness make homes prosperous and lengthen lifespans
These are legislative causes whose effects do not fail. This is what I wanted to remind you of.
The student : ... in the signs of the Hereafter, it is ordinary.

The Shaykh: Yes.
The student : One issue remains, O Shaykh.
Another student: The lengthening of life in that hadith is for the blessing. It is said to them as well that the blessing is among the decreed matters.

The Shaykh : The decreed, yes.
The student : The third issue.

The Shaykh : And therefore, they did not benefit anything from this interpretation.
