The Virtue of Tarawih Prayer, Reciting the Qur'an, and Completing Its Recitation
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: What about Tarawih, reciting the Qur'an, and completing the recitation of the Qur'an during the month of Ramadan?
A: There is no doubt that Tarawih prayer is a great act of devotion and worship that is prescribed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) led the Muslims in it for several nights, then he feared it would become obligatory upon them, so he left it off and directed them to pray in their homes. Then, when he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away and the caliphate passed to 'Umar after Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them both), he saw the people in the mosque praying it in scattered groups: this one praying for himself, this one for two, and this one for more. He said, "If only we could gather them behind a single imam." So he gathered them behind Uthman ibn al-Affan, and they began to pray it together. He cited as evidence for this the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sunan Abi Dawud 1372Sahih (Al-Albani), and he also cited the action of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on those nights. He said, "Indeed, revelation has ceased and the fear of it becoming obligatory has been removed." So the Muslims prayed it in congregation during his time (peace and blessings be upon him), then they prayed it during the time of 'Umar, and they continued to do so.
The hadiths point to this. For this reason, it came in an authentic hadith from him (peace and blessings be upon him):Jami` at-Tirmidhi 806Sahih (Darussalam), which was narrated by Imam Ahmad and the people of the Sunan with authentic chains. This indicates the legitimacy of standing in night prayer in congregation during Ramadan, and that it is the Sunnah of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and the Sunnah of the Rightly Guided Caliphs after him. In this, there are many benefits: the gathering of Muslims for good, their listening to the Book of Allah, and the sermons and reminders that may take place in these great nights.
It is prescribed for Muslims in this great month to study the Noble Qur'an and to engage with it day and night, following the example of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), for he used to review the Qur'an with Jibril every year in Ramadan, and he reviewed it with him twice in the last year. This is done for the sake of devotion, to reflect upon the Book of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) , to benefit from it, and to act upon it. It is from the practice of the righteous predecessors.
Therefore, the people of faith, both men and women, should occupy themselves with the Noble Qur'an through recitation, reflection, understanding, and reviewing books of tafsir for the sake of benefit and knowledge.

Indeed, whoever stands (praying) with the Imam until he finished, then it is recorded for him that he prayed the whole night.
