The Ruling on Takbir for Prostration of Recitation
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: Is takbir obligatory for the prostration of recitation, both inside and outside of prayer? Is the closing salam obligatory outside of prayer? I ask for your guidance, may Allah grant you success.
A: The prostration of recitation is like the prostration of prayer. So, if one prostrates in prayer, he says takbir, and when he rises, he says takbir, if he is in prayer. The evidence for this is what is established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he would say takbir in every lowering and raising in prayer: when he prostrated, he would say takbir, and when he stood up, he would say takbir. This is how the Companions reported about him (peace and blessings be upon him), in the hadith of Abu Hurayrah and others.
As for prostrating for recitation outside of prayer, only the takbir at the beginning has been narrated. This is the well-known view, as narrated by Abu Dawud and al-Hakim. As for the rising outside of prayer, no takbir or salam has been narrated for it.
Some scholars said: He says takbir when standing up and also says salam. However, nothing has been narrated regarding this, so it is not prescribed for him except the first takbir when prostrating, if it is outside of prayer.
What is prescribed is to say in the prostration of recitation what one says in the prostration of prayer, such as tasbih and supplication. There is no tashahhud in it, no takbir when rising, and no salam, according to the more correct of the scholars' opinions, because this was not transmitted from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
