The Form of Sending Blessings Upon the Prophet

Fatwa No. ( 18262 )
Q: One of them gave me a book titled (Majmu' Latif) which contains the Hizb of Friday, Surat al-Ikhlas, Surat al-Falaq, Surat al-Nas, Surat al-Kahf, Surat Yasin, and Surat Tabaarak. As you know, O Shaykh, it has exaggerated in sending blessings upon the Messenger, and it states that there is a sending of blessings upon the Messenger such that whoever says it will have the reward of a complete Hajj, and it is: "O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad the number of times birds flap their wings and jinn and devils fly, from the day the world was created to the Day of Resurrection. O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad in the night when it covers, and send blessings upon Muhammad in the day when it appears." Is it permissible to act upon this book, and has this been reported from the Messenger?
A: The form of sending blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has been explained in the authentic hadith:
O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and upon the family of Ibrahim, for You are Praiseworthy and Majestic. And bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim, for You are Praiseworthy and Majesticاللهم صل على محمد وعلى آل محمد، كما صليت على إبراهيم وعلى آل إبراهيم إنك حميد مجيد، وبارك على محمد وعلى آل محمد، كما باركت على إبراهيم وعلى آل إبراهيم إنك حميد مجيد
As-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Nasa'i 5:436
, and if one limits it to: "O Allah, send blessings and peace upon Muhammad," that is sufficient, as in the saying of Allah the Exalted:
O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace.يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا صَلُّوا عَلَيْهِ وَسَلِّمُوا تَسْلِيمًا
[Al-Ahzab 33:56]

As for the book mentioned, we do not see reliance upon it; because it is not well-known, and because the manner of sending blessings mentioned in it is not prescribed and is not narrated from the righteous Salaf, and in what Allah has prescribed there is sufficiency. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions and grant them peace.
