Question:
A message was sent from Jeddah by one of our sisters from there. The sender (E. A.), our sister, says: I got to know some bad friends, and all they did was drag me into many sins. Praise be to Allah, I got to know friends who fear Allah, and they were the best guide for me on the path of good. I want an answer from your eminence: what do you advise me regarding the sins I committed in the past? Will Allah forgive me? Also, what is the way to stay away from bad companions? They are still trying to harass me to make me turn back from the life of guidance. Please guide us, may Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
We advise you to stick to the last good friends, and to beware of the first ones; for they are evil. We also advise you to repent to Allah from the sins you have committed in the past. Whoever repents, Allah turns to him in mercy. Allah the Exalted says: [Taha:82], and He says: [Al-Nur:31]. Whoever repents, he succeeds. Repentance is sincere regret for the past, the resolve not to return to it, and caution against it. This is repentance.
Regret, abandoning the sins, and a sincere resolve not to return to them. If you do that, Allah will forgive you what has passed, through the regret, the abandonment, the non-return, and the sincere resolve not to go back. So you are on the right path, praise be to Allah, and Allah will accept your repentance, and the repentance of everyone who repents with a sincere repentance, a repentance of pure sincerity. Beware of returning to them. Stick to the good, last friends. Stick to them; for the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded the company of the righteous and warned against the company of the wicked. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 33:79 meaning: whoever associates with, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih Muslim 2628 He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: meaning: you buy Sahih al-Bukhari 5534 from this carrier of musk, and the bellows-blower is like the bad companion: Sahih Ibn Hibban 6:255.
So fear Allah, O questioner, and stick to the good friends, and stick to repentance from the sins that have passed, and beware of the bad friends. Yes.
The presenter : May Allah reward you with good, and may He do you good.

وَإِنِّي لَغَفَّارٌ لِمَنْ تَابَ وَآمَنَ وَعَمِلَ صَالِحًا ثُمَّ اهْتَدَىAnd turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.
وَتُوبُوا إِلَى اللَّهِ جَمِيعًا أَيُّهَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَRegret, abandoning the sins, and a sincere resolve not to return to them.
