Question:
Our sister says in her final question: Some of the young men, may Allah guide them, are shy about wearing the short thobe and the head covering as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do. Is there a word you would direct to the youth of the Ummah?
Answer:
It is obligatory for every Muslim man to guard against arrogance and letting the garment hang below the ankles, and his garment should reach the ankle, not going below the ankle. There is no shame in this; rather, this is the Sunnah, this is what is prescribed. However, the devils make falsehood attractive to people, and the deputies of the devils do the same. Otherwise, what is prescribed is that his garments reach the ankle. This is what is prescribed, and this is the dress of men. As for letting the garment hang below the ankles, it is forbidden, and it is also imitating women. The woman lets her garments hang because she is a private part, and her feet are a private part, so it is not fitting for a man to imitate a woman. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: He said, (peace and blessings be upon him):Sunan an-Nasa'i 5331Sahih (Darussalam) And he said, (peace and blessings be upon him): Sunan Abi Dawud 4087Sahih (Al-Albani) Muslim narrated it in his Sahih.
So it is not permissible for a Muslim to let his garments hang below the ankles; rather, the limit must be the ankle. If he raises it to the middle of the shin, that is better.
As for women, it is obligatory for them to let their garments hang, meaning to cover their feet. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about that, and he said: Some of the women said to him: Then their feet will be exposed. He said:
The woman is a private part, so she lets her clothes hang, an arm's length or less. As for the man, no, he is not allowed to let it hang below the ankle; rather, the limit is the ankle. As for the head, the matter is broad; it is not a private part for the man. If he puts a turban on it, or a cap, which they call a cap, or the known ghutrah, the matter is broad. Or if he leaves it uncovered, there is no harm; the matter is broad, just as Allah prescribed for the man in the state of ihram, where he wears the rida and the izar with nothing on his head. If he puts on his head what is customary, such as a turban, a kufiyyah, a ghutrah, or anything else that is customary, there is no harm. He wears what is customary among his people, not deviating from his people. The man wears what is customary on his head. If the custom of his people is the ghutrah, then it is the ghutrah. If their custom is the turban wrapped on the head, then it is the turban. If their custom is something else that has no religious objection, there is no harm, so that he does not deviate from them, and he does not wear something that makes him stand out from them.

I asked: Who are they, Messenger of Allah, they are losers and disappointed ? He repeated it three times. I asked: Who are they. Messenger of Allah, they are losers and disappointed ? He replied: The one who wears a trailing robe, the one who takes account of what he gives, and the one who produces a ready sale of a commodity by false swearing.
