The Ruling on Eating in Vessels That Have Images

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Is it permissible to eat from vessels that have images on them?

Answer:
There is no harm in that; because these vessels are treated with contempt, like a carpet and its like. However, leaving out the images is better; it is better and more beautiful to buy vessels that do not have images. Otherwise, the vessels... and their like are treated with contempt, like a mattress and like cushions. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) disapproved of the curtain with an image that Aisha had, he made two cushions from it to lean on. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)—and it came in the hadith of Abu Hurayrah that there is no objection to a carpet with images that is treated with contempt and used; there is no harm, or making two cushions from it that are placed in a corner.
So the conclusion is: what is treated with contempt, whether a carpet, a cushion, or a pillow; there is no harm. And vessels are of that same category; vessels, spoons, and their like are of the category...; because they are treated with contempt, used for needs like eating and the like. But the absence of images is purer and better. Yes.
