What is the authenticity of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) preserving poetry?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Some lecturers mentioned that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said a verse of poetry. What is the authenticity of this statement?

Answer:
This verse is authentic, but the Shaykh’s statement that he recited it is sufficient. If he had brought evidence, he would have said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said a verse of poetry, which is:
Are you not but a finger that has bled?
And in the path of Allah is what you have encountered?
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this, and Muslim narrated it in his Sahih. Muslim narrated it in his Sahih when an injury occurred to his finger and it bled, so he said this poetry, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.
And some said: No verse of poetry is preserved for him other than this verse; because Allah said:
And We did not give Prophet Muhammad, knowledge of poetry, nor is it befitting for himوَمَا عَلَّمْنَاهُ الشِّعْرَ وَمَا يَنْبَغِي لَهُ
[Yasin:69] And some hadith scholars said: No sound verse of poetry is preserved for him except this single verse:
Are you not but a finger that has bled?
And in the path of Allah is what you have encountered?

Meaning, he said this to display his patience and his seeking of reward—may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him—and that this matter is in the path of Allah, so there is no harm to you, O finger, and it does not harm you, and this is in the path of Allah.
