The Ruling on Fulfilling a Conditional Vow and to Whom It Is Given
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
We return to the questions of our Sudanese sister (E. H. M.), who asks this question about the vow. She says: I had a child who was broken, and I vowed that I would slaughter an animal if Allah willed for this child to walk. Indeed, the child was healed and is walking now, and I ask how I should act regarding the vow. Is it permissible for me and my family to eat from it, or not? May Allah reward you with good.
Answer: You must fulfill the vow; because the Prophet (peace be upon him) says: Allah the Exalted praised the one who fulfills the vow, so He said, Exalted and Majestic is He, in describing the righteous: [Al-Insan:7].
And you are to follow your intention. If you intended with the vow the poor, then distribute it among the poor. And if you did not intend anything, then likewise give it to the poor. But if you intended to slaughter a sheep at home and eat from it, you and the people of the house, then you are to follow your intention. The intention is primary in this matter. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) says:Sahih al-Bukhari 1 Yes.
