Some Rulings on Menstruation for Women

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
You say: Many women, at the onset of their period, are confused in their thoughts and do not know the rulings. They seek guidance for such women. May Allah reward you with good?
Answer: It is obligatory for them, when the period begins, to leave off the ritual prayer and fasting, as well as touching the mushaf for reading. This is because the menstruating woman is prohibited from prayer and fasting, just as she is prohibited from intercourse. There should be no hesitation in this. Allah, (Exalted and Majestic is He), says:
And they ask you about menstruation. Say, "It is harm, so keep away from wives during menstruation. And do not approach them until they are pure.وَيَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْمَحِيضِ قُلْ هُوَ أَذًى فَاعْتَزِلُوا النِّسَاءَ فِي الْمَحِيضِ وَلا تَقْرَبُوهُنَّ حَتَّى يَطْهُرْنَ
[al-Baqarah:222] And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Do everything except intercourseاصنعوا كل شيء إلا النكاح
Sahih Muslim 302
meaning: regarding the menstruating woman. And so it is with the woman in post-natal bleeding; he must not have intercourse with her. However, he may sleep with her, he may kiss her, and he may touch her; there is nothing wrong with that. But he must not have intercourse with the menstruating woman or the woman in post-natal bleeding. And upon them... upon the menstruating women and those in post-natal bleeding, they must fear Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) by avoiding what Allah has forbidden for them, such as prayer during menstruation, fasting, and intercourse during menstruation. All of this is prohibited.
And when they become pure, they should pray after that and make up the fasting they owe from Ramadan. The performance of the fast may be dropped from them, but its obligation is not dropped. Rather, they must make it up afterwards, specifically the making up of the fast. As for the prayer, it is dropped and not made up. And when the period comes, she must immediately abstain from prayer and fasting. And if she was fasting, the fast is invalid. Yes.
