Menstruation is not an excuse for leaving the fasting expiation
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of fatwa number ( 19667 )
Q1: I fasted one day of Ramadan, where my husband had intercourse with me with my consent , and I made up that day. Please give me a ruling, O honorable Shaykh, for I am today confused by my health conditions; I cannot fast two consecutive months, and the second condition is that my period comes to me monthly. Please give me a ruling, may Allah reward you with good.
A1: Intercourse during the day in Ramadan invalidates the fast, and necessitates an expiation along with making up that day. The expiation for each of you is freeing a believing slave; if one does not find one, then fasting two consecutive months; if one is unable, then feeding sixty poor people, along with sincere repentance from that sin. If you are unable to fast, then feed sixty poor people, giving each poor person half a sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg) of the local staple food, such as dates, barley, rice, or other such food.
As for the occurrence of menstruation, it is not an excuse for leaving the fasting, nor is it considered a breaker of the consecutiveness that is obligatory. It is completed from the third month, consecutively and connected to what came before it. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
