Verses and Hadiths of Threats According to the People of the Sunnah and the Community and Their Opponents

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The presenter: Your Eminence! Perhaps it is an opportunity for you to graciously speak about everything that has been mentioned regarding threats, whether in the Noble Qur'an or in the Prophetic hadiths?
Answer: What has been mentioned regarding threats among the people of the Sunnah and the community serves to urge the believer and incite the believing man and woman to be cautious of what is threatened against, such as leaving an obligatory duty or committing a forbidden act. This includes threats regarding leaving the prayer, leaving fasting, leaving zakah, leaving Hajj while having the ability, leaving dutifulness to parents, leaving maintaining family ties, leaving enjoining good and forbidding evil, and the like. These are threats intended to encourage the performance of obligatory duties. Similarly, what has been mentioned regarding threats for zina, drinking intoxicants, sodomy, undutifulness to parents, severing family ties, and riba (usury or interest)—all these types of threats are intended to deter and warn against the sins of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. If a Muslim commits one of these, it results in a deficiency in his faith and a weakening of his faith, and he is in danger of entering the Fire, but he does not become a disbeliever if what he committed is not disbelief. Rather, he is under the will of Allah; if Allah wills, He forgives him, and if He wills, He punishes him on the Day of Resurrection if he did not repent. This is because Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, says:
Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Himإِنَّ اللَّهَ لا يَغْفِرُ أَنْ يُشْرَكَ بِهِ
[Al-Nisa:48] Then He said after that:
And He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills.وَيَغْفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَلِكَ لِمَنْ يَشَاءُ
But if one dies upon disbelief in Allah and shirk with Allah, this is not forgiven, and its perpetrator is eternally in the Fire, we seek refuge in Allah. Allah the Exalted said:
But if they had associated others with Allah, then worthless for them would be whatever they were doing.وَلَوْ أَشْرَكُوا لَحَبِطَ عَنْهُمْ مَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ
[Al-An'am:88] And He, Glorified is He, said:
And whoever denies the faith - his work has become worthless, and he, in the Hereafter, will be among the losers.وَمَنْ يَكْفُرْ بِالإِيمَانِ فَقَدْ حَبِطَ عَمَلُه وَهُوَ فِي الآخِرَةِ مِنَ الْخَاسِرِينَ
[Al-Ma'idah:5].
The conclusion is that the sins a person commits, whether by leaving an obligatory duty or committing a forbidden act, if they are not from the category of disbelief in Allah and major shirk, they result in a deficiency in faith and a weakening of faith, and the person does not become a disbeliever as the Khawarij say. No, the Khawarij say: whoever commits a sin becomes a disbeliever. In their view, whoever commits zina is a disbeliever, whoever drinks intoxicants is a disbeliever, and whoever is undutiful to his parents is a disbeliever. This is wrong. The statement of the Khawarij is invalid. The people of the Sunnah and the community say: sin diminishes faith and weakens faith, and they do not declare someone a disbeliever for a sin. But they say: he is under the will of Allah. If he dies upon a sin, such as dying upon zina without repenting, dying while being undutiful to his parents without repenting, or dying while drinking intoxicants without repenting, this is under the will of Allah. He is not a disbeliever if he knows that it is forbidden and does not consider it permissible, knowing that it is forbidden and a sin, but Satan or his desires overcame him. Then he is under the will of Allah, and he is deficient in faith and weak in faith, but he does not become a disbeliever because of it, nor is he eternally in the Fire. Rather, whenever he enters the Fire, he is punished in it for as long as Allah wills, then Allah takes him out of the Fire due to his tawhid (the oneness of Allah) and Islam upon which he died. This is the consensus of the people of the Sunnah and the community, may Allah have mercy on them. So sins diminish faith and weaken faith, and righteous deeds increase faith. Faith, according to the people of the Sunnah and the community, increases and decreases. It increases with righteous deeds and dhikr (the remembrance of Allah), and it decreases with heedlessness and sin. If a person dies upon a sin, he is under the will of Allah. If Allah wills, He forgives him and admits him to Paradise, and if He wills, He punishes him according to the degree of the sin, whether it is zina, theft, drinking intoxicants, undutifulness to parents, or something else. If he dies without repenting, he is under the will of Allah. If Allah wills, He forgives him and pardons him due to his tawhid and faith, and the good deeds he has. And if our Lord, Exalted and Majestic, wills, He punishes him according to the degree of the sins upon which he died. Then, after he is purified and tested in the Fire for the duration that Allah has decreed for him, after this he is taken out of the Fire to Paradise due to the tawhid upon which he died and the Islam upon which he died. This is the statement of the people of truth, the people of the Sunnah and the community, contrary to the Khawarij, the Mu'tazilah, and those who follow their path, for they have opposed the truth. The correct statement is that of the people of the Sunnah and the community: that sin does not take one out of Islam, and it does not necessitate eternal abode in the Fire if its perpetrator is a Muslim who affirms the oneness of Allah, but he committed some sins such as zina, drinking intoxicants, undutifulness to parents, or riba, and he did not consider it permissible. He sees that he is a sinner and does not consider it permissible. He sees that he is a sinner and that he is wronging himself, but his desires and Satan overcame him. Then he is under the will of Allah. He may be pardoned if he dies upon the tawhid of Allah. He may have great good deeds, charities, and things of goodness, so Allah forgives him for that. And he may be punished according to the degree of the sins upon which he died while being a Muslim, then Allah takes him out after the punishment and purification to Paradise. It is established in the mutawatir (mass-transmitted) hadiths from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding this. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) informed in the mutawatir hadiths that he intercedes for the sinners of his Ummah. Allah gives him a large group of them. He intercedes with several intercessions for the sinners of the Ummah of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). So Allah sets a limit for him, and he takes them out of the Fire and they are thrown into the River of Life, where they grow as a seed grows in the flood of the rain. When their creation is complete, they are admitted to Paradise. Several intercessions, and every time he intercedes, Allah gives him a group of people and sets a limit for him. And so the believers intercede. The angels intercede, the prophets intercede for their nations.
The point is that this is the truth, this is the truth. It should be known. As for what the Khawarij said about the disbelief of the sinner, the fornicator, and the like, and that he is eternally in the Fire, and similarly the Mu'tazilah followed them in his eternal abode in the Fire, and the Ibadis said the same as them regarding his eternal abode in the Fire, this is deniable, this is invalid. One must be cautious of it and repent to Allah from it. It is obligatory for whoever says this statement to repent to Allah and to adopt the statement of the people of the Sunnah and the community. And Allah is the Helper, and there is no power or strength except with Allah. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
