Question:
It is customary in our country for the family of the deceased to receive people to offer condolences by opening gatherings and providing food, not with the intention of wailing, but to honor the visitors. Is this permissible?

Answer:
Answer: This is contrary to the Sunnah. Condolences have no designated place and no designated days. Rather, when you meet someone who has suffered a calamity, you console them in any place with words that comfort them, benefiting the living and the deceased by making du'a for both. There is no need for expenses, for suspending work, or for obligating those who come to bring slaughtered animals or sheep. The one who does not bring sheep is boycotted. All of this is not permissible. This is not condolence. What is this? These are chains and shackles that have burdened people. The family of the deceased are not the ones who provide the food; food is prepared for them according to their need, and this is the Sunnah. They do not prepare food for the people; this is contrary to the Sunnah.
