The ruling on those who strike their bodies with daggers and swords and claim it to be a karamah (a miracle granted to a righteous person)
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
He says: There are some shaykhs—as they are called—who strike their bodies with knives, daggers, and swords, and some of them challenge one another, each of them seeking nearness to Allah through his shaykh. What is the ruling of the Shari'ah on this act? May Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
This is the practice of the Sufiyyah (the Sufis). They claim that they do not harm themselves and that this is among their karamahs (miracles granted to a righteous person). It is batil (invalid); it is nothing but deception, and there is no reality to it. It is merely deception and sleight of hand to fool the eyes, whether he strikes himself with a sword, breaks his head, or breaks his leg; it is all deception with no reality. And by this, they are kafir (disbelievers); because they cast magic over people, as Allah said regarding the magicians of Pharaoh: [Ta-Ha:66], and He said: [Al-A'raf:116]. So these leaders who deceive people are disbelievers by that; they are criminal magicians. Yes.
