Explaining the Prescribed Supplication After Prayer

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Is it permissible for the imam, after concluding the obligatory prayer, to supplicate for the acceptance of the prayer and fasting, for the rectification of affairs, and for mercy upon the living and the dead, with the worshippers saying "Ameen" behind him? If this is not permissible, what is the evidence? May Allah reward you.

Answer:
It is not permissible for the imam to supplicate after the five daily prayers, whether he raises his hands or not, while the people say "Ameen." This is not prescribed, because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not do it, and the Companions did not do it. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected.من عمل عملًا ليس عليه أمرنا فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718b
, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
'A'isha reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: He who innovates things in our affairs for which there is no valid (reason) (commits sin) and these are to be rejected.من أحدث في أمرنا هذا ما ليس منه فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718a
. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not raise his hands and supplicate while the people said "Ameen" after Fajr, nor after Zuhr, nor after 'Asr, nor after Maghrib, nor after 'Isha'. Nor did he supplicate without raising his hands while they said "Ameen" to his supplication.
As for a person making du'a' for himself or for the Muslims between himself and his Lord, after the dhikr, there is nothing wrong with it. As for the shared du'a' between the imam and the ma'mum, or raising the hands, this is not prescribed, and our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not do it, nor did his righteous successors, and we do not know of anyone among the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them)who did it.
