The Ruling on Supplication After Prayer

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
What is the ruling on supplication after the prayer?
Supplication after the prayer, if the intention is to make up for any deficiency in it, is prescribed. Among such acts is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to seek forgiveness three times after the taslim,He said: saying, "I seek the forgiveness of Allah, I seek the forgiveness of Allah, I seek the forgiveness of Allah", meaning I ask Allah for forgiveness. However, if the supplication is for other purposes, it is better to make it before the taslim, based on the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the hadith of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud: "Then let him choose whatever supplication he wishes".
It is not fitting for a person to turn away from his Lord with the taslim from the prayer and then go off to make supplication. Rather, what is more fitting is that as long as you are in the presence of Allah, whispering to Him and calling upon Him (Mighty and Majestic), you should continue. For this reason, it was not the way of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) to make supplication after the taslim from the prayer, except in what is considered making up for a deficiency in it, such as seeking forgiveness.
As far as I know, it is not recorded of him after the obligatory prayer or after the voluntary prayer except once. That was when the disbelievers of Quraysh placed the placenta of a camel on his back while he was prostrating under the Ka'bah before the migration. The story is famous and well known. When he finished the prayer, he raised his hands to make supplication. And I think, may Allah know best, this was to annoy these disbelievers and to instill fear in their hearts; because if he had made supplication while praying, they would not have known about it. So when he finished his prayer, he raised his hands to make supplication. This had a specific reason, and Allah the Exalted knows best.
And with this, this session ends. May we meet again in a future session, if Allah wills. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
